TO-DAY’S INSTALLMENT.
“For tile simple reason that the
persons concerned never attached any
great importance to it," replied Nar-
kom. “consequently it was never re
ported to the police. Indeed. I had
difficulty in recalling the circum
stances to a great many of them.
“The most of them appear to have
thought it the trick of a child or
children, scrawling numbers haphaz
ard on the doorstep, and forgot all
about the matter after a servant had
washed them away. Besides, the
deaths never fallowed instantly, but
for a week to two weeks afterward.
Then, too, the cases ^vere widely sep
arated, no two happening in the same
neighborhood, and the sudden deaths
not being confined to any one par
ticular class, nor—save in one in
stance—to parties who had been mj
much as simply acquainted with each
other. For instance, one victim was
au cmnieht judg' , another a mere
draper’s clerk, a third a well known
musician, a fourth a green-grocer, a
fifth an actor, and so on all down ^he
list. Some were in the suburbs, oth
ers in the town, several were in the
country; so that it was not likelj
that the family of one victim would
hear of the green chalk marks having
also appeared upon the house of an
other. Indeed, It is doubtful that the
marks would ever have recurred to
the memory of any had I not recalled
them to mind by my inquiry regard
ing them."
"And what put it into your head to
do that?"
Lady Jennifer’s Appeal.
“Lady Jennifer’s ajipeal to me. Her
son' had been stricken down with sud
den illness at the beginning of the
week. Three day* ago the green chalk
317 appeared upon the doorstep of
the house where she lives.
"But that need not have caused her
uneasiness. 1 recall

families than hers under that roof.
Why. then, should she take the marks
as applying to herself or her son?
Why, indeed, attach any significance
to them if she never heard of those
other cases? You said the victims
were in all - cas*** stranger--- to each
other. Hum-m-m!”
“In all cashes but one." < orrected
Narkom. “That one was the sister of
a victim, ('leek. Lady Jennifer had
not seen her for more than two years.
She came nr» to town for a for. cays
and called upon her ladyship In en
tering, she saw those chalk .marks'
which the can taker of tin* fiats was
endeavoring to wipe away. It recalled
the similar marks on the doorstep of
her late brother’s houve prior to hi
death. Hut even so, it is (jodbti'ui if
she would have attach *d any peculiar
significance to them hi d she not, ui on-
reaching her friend’s flat, discovered a
circumstance which, linked to them.
