Business Is Capable of All Kinds of j
Development—Pleasant and
Profitable.
%
We so often hear the admonition
of “Back to the farm.’’ This is good
advice, but it should be remembered
in this connection that this back to
the farm need not be construed to
mean the ordinary cropping or farm
work, which, of curse, is all right in
its place, hut there is another branch
of the Industry that may be much
nore interesting to many than the
ordinary routine.
We speak of the poultry business.
This business is capable of all kinds
of development. There are many
branches of the business that may he
taken up according to the tastes and
inclinations of the operator.
There are so many of our young
men leaving the farm apparently to
get rid of hard work, going to the
cities expecting to find snaps ready
to be handed out to them. Now often
they have been disappointed. In the.
place of the short hours and easy
times they had expected to find they
| found long hours, small pay, exact
ing duties, with heavy board bills to
to say nothing of the evil habits
are likely to drift into. Many
I of them are wise enough to see the

mistake they have made, but are too
proud to acknowledge the mistake
and turn to the back track for the
farm.
Possibilities of Poultry.
There are those who have seen the
possibilities of the poultry farm, and
are preparing themselves for th,e life
work; they are attending special
poultry schools and fitting themselves
for this life work. A good many are
heading large egg farms and are
making good money out of them. Of
iursc there are those who have tried
and failed, just as they are wont to
fail in any other line of business from
a lack of application or from not be
ing suited to the business.
You will find these wrecks strewn
along the shore of any line of busi
ness. 1 have often thought that if
boys and girls just getting into man
hood and womanhood would spend
more time in studying the husy hen
and conditions surrounding her thev
would be walking upon good canet*
In their own homes rather than tread
ing the hard pavements hunting Jobs
which, If obtained, would enable them
to but little more than exist
Many despise the hen, yet she has
come to the rescue of many a Der
son when they have been In hard
lines. There is no reason why a hen
should not show a profit of one or
more dollars to her credit each vexr
The better profits are realized by the
ability of the person to turn* even
cent possible to good account.
Investment Is Small.
A young man or young woman who
engages in the poultry business doe«
not have to invest his thousands of
dollars in the business and wait years
for the business to grow in order to
give him a profit.
Good poultry and eggs can be sold
anywhere on earth for cash any time
They will always sell for enough to
give you a profit on the money in
vested and the cost of feeding. You
can buy your feed to-day and to-mor
row the hens will pay for it. Did
you ever stop to think of this? What
a business of prompt returns it is?
Good room is advisable, yet is not
an absolute necessity. I have a
neighbor who keeps successfully 400
hens upon less than a half acre, and
he is making money off of it too. He
or rather he and his wife, for his
wife, though the silent partner, is the
one behind the gun that makes sure
that the thing goes off at the proper
time each day.
If a young man or young woman
either, for that matter, have a liking
for this kind of work or feel inclined
to cultivate such a liking they will
succeed. On the other hand, if they
have real aversion to the work thev
will not succeed and my advice is t»
keep entirely away from all of it.
