Buying and Selling
Of Eggs for Hatching
Six Strong Chrcks From a Setting
of Fifteen Is Considered
Satisf actory.
As Gm* old saying goes, there are
two Hide* lo every question, and no
where are th*\ more important than
in the buy ing and selling of eggs for
hatching. We art now juwt In the
midst of the egg .season. When egg*
are to be bought the purchaser, as a
rule, seeks to get aJI he can for his
money, both in quantity ami quality.
This 1* but natural and all right, but
!he question very' naturally comes up:
What should the pun baser reason
ably expect of tlie seller'.’ As to tile
price lo be paid that is a matter
to be decided before \\> make our
purchase. If we conclude a breeder
has a cert a in quality of stock we are
both looking lor or seeking, we as
certain the price and are willing to
give It; that settles the matter. The
next question that comes up before
the buyer is. What kind or a hatch
is h« going to get. and what is he
entitled to under the circumstances.
There ate a number of qualifica
tion* light in this connection that en
ter and splendid results follow. The
^fR* may have to be shipped several
hundred miles. subject to rough
handling. Th1* very materially les
sen* the probability of « full hatch.
This the purchaser has waived w hen
lie place* his order with the breeder
a! such a distance True, the dis
tance may cut but a little figure in
the matter and a splendid result
en*ue.
Stock From Yard*.
Agiiin. when we buy egg* of an ex
tensive breeder who Is obliged to yard
his breeding stock, we should take in
consideration the fact that stock from
yard*, a* a rule, will not produce as
large a per cent of fertile or hatch-
able eggs a* farm stock allowed full
and free range The question comes
to us then: What should we expect
a* a hatch from shipped eggs We

have all kinds of experience all along
tlte line, both as the buyer and the
seller. \W consider a hatch of six
good, strong, vigorous chick* from
fifteen eggs (tljat had been shipped)
on* not to be complained of. Should
we g«*i a hatch of ten or twelve, we
would be very much pleased. Should
we succeed in raising to maturity
thret- or four good specimens of the
quality we presumed we were paying
for. we would be mighty well repaid
for th. investment of time and money.
On the other side, the question
arise.- Are bleeders and seller* of
giving oui customers what they
buy?, If we are selling eggs at $2.50
per setting arc they from good pure
stock, not mixed in any way by com
ing in contact with a different or
mixed stock? Should our price be
$f* per setting we should see well to
it that nothing but flrst-clas* stock
enters our yards. Well selected, well
touted, uniformly standard in makeup
and many of them suited for the show’
room.
Then comes the $10-per-setting
[tuan. usually the breeder with a large
*how record, long and successful
breeding career. His yard* are pre
sumed to be mated from Ills prize
winner* and stock of the same breed
ing and class, it is the duty of such
breeder to be sure that no inferior
eggs are slipped into the trays. It
might be a temptation when eggs are
in great demand—orders ahead of the
supply—to do this. But there is no
excuse for it and the man who would
do it would do a w f hole lot of other
mean things after the same fashion.
It I* also the duty of the seller to
furnish reasonably fresh eggs in each
and every’ case. This is due the pur
chaser. whether he is getting $1 eggs
or $10 eggs The sooner we can get
the buyer and the seller each to un
derstand his position and relative re
sponsibility to the other, the better
it will be for both parties and the
business at large. Please do not get
il into your head that every con
sideration is due you and that nothing 1
is due the other party. GET RIGHT, j
Questions and Answers.
Judge Marshall: Will you kindly in
form me the diet on which you rai*e
your baby chickens; also let me know
what vou think of chick meal 5 and
12. and chick grain; also what do you
think .of feeding Aunt Patsy dry mash
to baby chicks? Thanking you in ad
vance for this information, beg to re
main Yours truly.
C. P. P.
ANSWER:—The small mixed chick
grain feed and plain rolled oats are
the best feeds to start young chicks
with that I know of. Any good dry
mash that does not have much meat
scraps or strong ingredients in it is
all right for little chicks. One that
we have always liked is made of
equal parts pure wheat bran, shorts
and corn meal, put in a hopper where
they can get to it at any time, but
cannot scratch it out and w’aste it.
The principal thing is to feed as many
things dry as possible, for we have
found that wet mashes, and particu
larly of corn meal, tend to cause sour
crops and indigestion, indicated bloat
ing, etc. Plain rolled oats is one of
the nicest and safest feeds for the
first two or three days that you can
use. Wheat is a good feed, but it had
best be cracked along with some corn
and fed that way, sifting out the
flour and meal that come with it.

Improvements at Decatur.
Many signs of civic improvement
have been noted of late at Decatur.
Individuals are planting hedges and
flowers along the public highways;
the Georgia Railroad is preparing to
beautify its right of way through the
town, and a landscape architect is
buav shaping up the grounds of the
DeKalb County court house.
Decatur citizens are exulting over
the railroad improvement. They see
in this step the beginning in the State
of much more work along this line,
after the plan of railways in the East
which have beautified their suburban
stations with parks and flowers.
Decatur has done a great deal •»?
sidewalk and street work, and the
latest slogan is "plant trees."
