When Hens Fail in
Duty Chicks Will
Die in the Shell
When Eggs Are Not Shifted and
Turned They Grow Fast
to the Shell.
Why do not all blooms produce
ft uit7 Why do not all acorns pro
duce great, straight, magnificent oaks?
Why dots not each and every stalk of
corn bring forth an ear of corn? Who
can give the reason for all these ap
parent failures in the plants of na
ture?
A customer writes that out of two
settings of 30 eggs they hatched but
20 chicks. Two were not fertile and
eight were dead in the shell. They
thought I should duplicate all eggs
that did not hatch, and particularly
those that died in the shell, but we
could not see it that way.
We were not on the ground to hold
a post-mortem upon those dead chicks
so could not tell who was to blame or
what was the cause of the deaths. We
ascertained afterwards that all the
dead-in-the-shell chicks were under
one hen. Our presumption, then, is
that that particular hen did not do
her duty in shifting or turning her
eggs and that they grew fast to the
shell upon one side, and being unable
to liberate themselves at the proper
tine* died from exhaustion.
Another theory is that the eggs
were kept several days before they
were set and were not turned each
day as they should have been. Still
another is that all those eggs were
laid by one hen. which being of low
vitality or from inbred stock, did not
< vigor enough to the egg for the
chick to free itself from the shell.
Cause of Cripples.
Another person buys 100 eggs to put
in an incubator, and at the expiration
of three weeks or more informs the
seller that they hatched about 80 per
cent of all eggs, hut that about 20 per
cent of them were cripples of one
kind and another, and felt that the
shipper was to blame for all of it.
What is the cause? We think it is
caused by the 'improper handling of
the eggs while in the machine being
incubated. The embryo chick is but
a network of blood vessels; yet each
separate organ is perfect in embryo or
miniature. It is not hard to under
stand how readily a leg might be de
formed by that particular blood vessel
sticking to the shell, as it often does
w hen it has not been moved about as
often as it should by the frequent
turning of the eggs in the machine.
Many people turn their eggs by
having two trays, putting one upon
the other and simply transferring the
eggs from one tray to the other, which
puts them first one side up and then
the other, in practically the same posi
tions every other day. We think the
better way is to put your hand upon
the eggs and twirl them about In a
promiscuous manner, yet moving
them ail and getting them into differ
ent positions each time. If one sees
to it that the eggs are well turned at
least once a day (twice being better)
we will have fewer of the crippled
chicks we ar P sure. If they are badly
crippled it is economy and humane to
promptly put them under the sod.
Questions and Answers.
Question—If eggs for hatching be
come badly soiled in the nest, will it
do them any harm to wash them up
clean if I use no soap on them?
Answer—No; a good washing and
soaking for that matter w ill do them
no harm whatever. Of course the wa
ter should be about the temperature of
the eggs, so that there will be r.o chill
ing. They should be wiped off before
returning them to the nest. If it was
in an incubator, it would not make
any difference about drying them. Re
cent experiments have proven that it
is a splendid thing to wet a cloth in
a 90 per cent solution of alcohol and
wipe all eggs off with it. Which
tends to remove the minute spores of
the white diarrhoea germ. It can be
used at moderate temperature of from
Go to TO degrees. Such a process is
advocated as giving a more vigorous
chick.
