Jell Phone A bitterly fought telephone rut*' battle that promises' to open up high ly important questions of rate-making methods in Georgia, to-day was an nounced in prospect by U. M. Can dler, chairman of the State Railroad Commission. The contest, which will be between the* Southern Led Telephone and Tel- j egraph Company and the city of Co lumbus, Go., will be started before the Railroad Commission as soon as the telephone company completes an audit of ito business tributary to the Columbus central. Ask Return tn Old Rates. The Columbus City Council is fight ing to compel the company to go back to its old rates of $4 a month for business and $2.50 a month for resi dence telephones, although an agree - 1 ment was made bv a previous Council i that the company might charge $T. i for its business and $3.25 for its real- donee telephones when it had 2,500 j telephone stations in operation in the I city. The final decision on the contest is j expected by Chairman Candler to | have an important bearing on tele j phone rates all over the State. If it is decided that the charges from | the manner in which they are fixed by i the Southern Bell are discriminatory j or unfair it is considered likely that ; other methods of rate-making, such I as some form of the meter System, ' will be suggested to be Worked out i by the company and the Commission • for application throughout the State. | New Council Opens Fight. When the Southern Bell Company purchased an old line in Columbus several years ago. the City Council was willing to grant it the privilege of raising its rates when ft bad made certain improvements and increased its subscribers to 2,500 A new Coun cil. however, opposed the agreement. As soon as the company inaugurated its advanced rates, which it delayed nearly two years beyond the time the agreement would have permitted flic new Council began its fight. The Commission lias ruled that the company may charge the advanced rates, with the obligation to repay the excess if the Commission subse quently finds the rate is too high S60-M0NTH CLERK SAYS HE HAS STOLEN $30,000 CLEVELAND, OHIO, April 25.
