A bitterly fought telephone rate
battle that promises* to open up high
ly important questions of rate-making
methods in Georgia, to-day was an
nounced in prospect by (' M. Can
dler, chairman of the State -Railroad
Commission.
The contest, which will be between
the Southern Fa 1 Telephone and Tel
egraph Company anil the city of < o-

the Railroad Commission as soon as
the telephone company completes an
audit of it?* business tributary to the
Columbus central.
Ask Return to Old Rates.
The Columbus City Council is fight
ing to compel the company to go back
to its old rates of $4 a month for
. business and $2.50 a month for resi
dence telephones, although an agree-
| ment.was made by a previous Council
i that the company might charge $ >
for its business and $11.25 for its real*
deuce telephones when it had 2,500
telephone stations in operation in the
j city.
The final decision on the contest is
! expected by Chairman Candler to
j have an important bearing on tele-
i phone rates all over the Slate. If
' it is decided that the charges from
the manner in which they are fixed by
the Southern Bell are discriminatory j
