Well Balanced Food
Gives Best Results
In Egg Production
When Chickens Are Healthy Output
Is Sure—How to
Feed.
There are many inquiries as to how
and what to prepare In the shape of
food for poultry to secure the best re
sults and not to be dependent upon
any of tire--ho-called prepared foods.
I believe but a small proportion
of the poultry raisers of this country
understand what constitutes a bal
anced food. What they want to know
first Is what kind of food will give the
best results in egg production. A
generous egg production is a sure sign
that the fowl* are in a most favorable
and healthy condition.
A balanced ration is one that con
tains 1 1-2 to 2 pei - cent of ash, which
is the bone-forming agent; 21 per
cent of protein, which is the muscle-
growing and egg-producing agent; 60
per cent of carbohydrates and 20 per
cent of fat, these last two being the
material upon which the fowl lives
while she produces the eggs and the
waste material. We can not manage
to obtain this combination in grains
ab>ne, but have to feed meat and veg
etable matter in conjunction with the
grain to balance the matter. How to
do tills with beefscrap, potatoes, cab
bage and mangel-wurzel beets is
what nine-tenths of those that are
getting all, or a good share, of their
living from hen.® want to know.
Morning Mash.
Let me give it to you in a nutshell
a morning mash—20 pounes of corn.
20 pounds of good wheat bran. 20
pounds of tirst-class oats and 10
Ducks.

pounds of barley. Have the mixture
ground into a tine jnea!. To this add
20 pounds of best ground dried beef-
scrap or dried blood. Mix the whole
thoroughly and use it for a morning
mash. Pour scalding water on it at
night and keep it covered until morn
ing. If it is then wet and soggy, add
wheat bran until it is a crumbly mash.
You can soon learn to know just how
much water is required to make it
just right. Give to the fowls just
what they will eat up c lean.
Its warming influence will send tlie
females to the nest and nine-tenths of
the eggs will be secured before noon.
Hang cabbages and sugar beets up in
the coops to provide vegetable sub
stance for the fowls to give . tnein
something to work on during the day.
h is an excellent thing to throw a
handful of millet seed into their
scratching material in the open air
pen to keep them busy until nearly 4
o’clock; then open your dry mash feed
boxes, which should be filled with a
mixture of cracked* corn, oats and
barley, and let them fill their crons
for the night. Keep before them all
the time charcoal, grit and crushed
oyster shells, so that they may help
themselves as they please. In the
absence of cabbage and beets during
the winter time, give steamed alfalfa
or clover meal.
in summer, when they have the run
of the fields, they get all the vegeta
ble matter they need, and if there are
not too many of them to the acre they
get a good proportion of the necessary
animal matter in the shape of worms
and insects, and you can, therefore,
feed less of the beefscrap.
Give them plenty of fresh air, free
from direct drafts, and success will
he your reward. •
Soft-Shelled Eggs.
Judge Marshall; I have a few hens
that lay soft-shelled eggs at nignt.
Will you please tell me why this «s
and give me a remedy if you can? I
keep oyster shell and grit before them
all the time. I will appreciate an an
swer to this very much indeed. I am,
Yours truly. J. S. Z.
Ben Hi!!. Ga.
ANSWER—The condition of your
hens in dropping those soft-shelled
eggs at night would indicate not so
much a lack of shell-forming mate
rial,'although it may be partly due to
that, but weakness of the oviduct in
not being able to retain the egg up
to its full time when the shell is fully
hardened. I would take it that your
hens have been getting too much rich,
concentrated food, like whole corn or
cornmeal mashes with cotton seel
meal. Perhaps your hens have been
eating after pigs or cows and have
been getting a lot of the meal on their
own account. What they need is more
w heat bran, alfalfa meal and various
kinds of green stuff to give them more
real strength and not so much fat.
