A Water Glass Method For Preserving Eggs Sodium Silicate and Potassium Sili cate Mixture Best Pre servative. At this season eggs arc at their cheapest stage of the year, and for that reason it Is a good time to put them away for fall and winter use at a time when they are both high in price and scarce Tli£re are a number of sun cessluJ methods, but perhaps about the most successful of them is the water glass method Water glass is the popular name for sodium silicate, or potas sium silicate, the commercial article often being a mixture of the two. The commercial water glass is used for preserving eggs, as it is much cheap r than the chemically pure article which is requited for many scientific pur poses. Water glass is usually sold in two forma- a thick syrup of a consisten cy of molasses .and a powder. The .syrup form is usually sold for pre serving eggs, and varies in price from 2 cents per pound at wholesale in carboys up to 10 cents per pound, the regular retail price. Perhaps the best formula to use under ordinary condi- i tions is one part of the thick syrup to ten parts of pure water by meas ure Exercise Care. Frequently the water glass sold is very alkaline and should be avoided if possible, as it tends to soften the shells of the' eggs and they do not keep so w« ll. Only pure water.should be used in making the solution, and it is advisable to boil it and cool it before mixing it with the water glass. Eggs Ducks. They should he stored in a cool place. Only clean eggs should be packed. It is not best to wash eggs, however, as that removes much of the coating of the egg and makes it more porous; it does not keep so well. One gallon of the water glass will make a solu tion sufficient to preserve 50 dozen eggs, if they are properly packed. Lime water makes a fairly good preservative and is cheaper than the water glass. This solution may be Poultry—All Varieties. FiuTe■'range~i»ft:k~and j *<jTltky FARM, Chamblee. Ga. Large stock of White Runners. The eggs should be placed In a clean earthen vessel and covered with pound of salt is added to this much lime water, but his mixture, is said to impart a (flight lime taste to the eggs. It is rather too much to expect that eggs preserved for any length of time by any of these methods will be as perft t as fresh eggs. Feeding the Male. Jqdge Marshall: I have a Buff Or pington cockerel that seems all at tention to the ten with which’he is mated, calling them all the time they are eating their feed. In that wav he fails to get nis siiaVe of the Teed' and as a result. Is getting very thin in flesh. What can 1 do to remedy this trouble so that lie may get some thing to eat? I shall certainly appre ciate unv help you may give me. Respectfully. J. (\ <’ASE. Columbus, Ga. ANSWER -Your case is no uncom mon one; in fact, many cockerels when mated for the first time with a lot of females will bo so gallant that they will fail to get their share of the feed. ()f course, if you were using the hopper system of feeding there Would be no trouble In that way, but since you are not, the plan for you to adopt Js to fasten a tin can directly on top of a stake driven into the ground, having it Just as high as pos sible so the cockerel can eat out of it, which will be too high for the hens. There being no place for th<‘ hens to stand to reach it. they will be out of the game and the young male can eat at his leisure. 1 have done this for years in such cases and have found that they do tnueh better for the trouble. Of course, it would have been much better if you had been able to have given him the better chance as soon as you noticed that he was not eating and before he had lost in flesh.
