Filth. White diarrhea is the great scourge. This dread disease, like all other chicken diseases, is caused more of ten by neglect than anything else. It is caused mainly by crowding 100 chicks into a brooder only suited for 50 chicks, or feeding any kind of food which happens to be the most con venient. And by allowing them to go too long without water so that when they do get it they drink too much, which fails to pass out of The crop as rapidly as it should, and it causes the feed to sour there, and you know the rest of the story. When you see the chalk-like deposit on tlie droppings of little chicks you will know there is trouble at hand. Chicks will be apparently all right with the exception of being daubed with this white deposit at^ night, and. as the Irishman said, wake up dead in the morning. When you have a brooder full of chicks, or a lot with a hen for that matter, and some of them show signs of the trouble on close examination cull every such one out and get rid of him. The sooner the better. Clean their quarters in a thorough manner, washing everything with which they have come in contact with hoi water and a scrub brush. Then use some good disinfectant. Sun it well to be sure it is dry before you let the chicks in again. Put plenty of road dust sifted upon the floor. Feed care fully for several days; place in a shallow pan a handful of beef scraps; upon this place some good pure wheat bran. Feed some good dry chick grain in the litter two or three times a day. and pay special attention to their drinking water. A good-sized fountain is the best as it keeps the water cool longer than an open ves sel. See that this is cleansed thor oughly and filled with clean water once a day. A little care and atten tion to details where they have been neglected will usually right matters. Remember that crowding will also bring trouble. The only way to stamp out any infectious disease is to get rid of the infected ones. Scaly Leg. Judge Marshall: I want to ask you a question about some of my hens. Quite a number of them have very large rough legs. They are almost twice the size of the other hens’ legs, and seem stiff, so that they can hard ly walk. Can you tell me what the trouble is and some good remedy for it? MRS. S. R. W. Dalton, Ga. Answer: Your hens are afflicted with w'hat is commonly known as scaly legs. It is a very annoying trou ble. but one that can be very easily controlled if taken in time. It is caused by a burrowing insect which digs its way under the scales of the leg and throws out the rough matter, tion. After they have worked at it for many months, in some instances, it becomes so thick and heavily in- crOsted that it stiffens the joints so much that it makes it difficult for the fowl to walk. The wise thing to do is when you notice the first traces of it in your flock to get to work at once and dip every one that shows the least signs of the trouble into a can of kerosene just up to the feathers, but not onto them. Repeat this in about a week, and if they are not very rough two applications will ef fect a cure. Then they should he treated with a little cotton seed oil, or something of that nature to smooth them up. In cases like yours, where they have so badly roughened, it will be necessary to give them a number of treatments of the kerosene to ef fect a cure. It takes time to get the roughened surface loosened up and cleaned off. Do not try to pull it off with the fingers as that will cause it to bleed and leave a sore place. .lust give the oil time to get in its work killing out the insects and loosening the foreign matter. It is a trouble that is transmitted from one to an other. so that It is advisable to get rid of it as soon as possible, which hardens and clings to the sur face of the leg and causes the very unsightly appearance which you men- Ducks.
