There are a number of successful mat hods, bat perhaps about the most Miocessful of them is the water glare zneftoori. Wa.ter glass is the popular name tor sodium silicate, or j iotas ainxn silicate, the commercial article often being a mixture of the two. The commercial water glass 1* used for preserving eggs. as It is much cheaper chan the chemically pure article which Ik rajulfed for many scientific pur- pouff. Water glass* Is usually sold in two form*—-a. thick syrup of a consisten- <ry of molasses ami a powder. Th syrup form is usually sold for pre- .•ers'tikg Hgrgs. and varies in price from 1 cents per pound at wholesale in arbors up to 10 oents per pound, the regular ratal 1 price. Perhaps the best formula to use under ordinary condi tions is <*ne part of the thick syrup to ten parts of pure water by meas ure. Exercise Care. Frequently the water sold is vert alkaline and should be avoided it possible, sh it tends to soften the shells of the eggs and they do not keep so well. Only pure water should be used in making the solution, and It Is advisable to boil it and cool it before mixing it with the water glass. The solution should be < .irefuliy poured over the eggs, packed in a suitable vessel—stone crocks or Jars and if barrels or keg* are used they should bo thoroughly scalded with boiling water before using to prevent any foreign odors from clinging to them and affecting the eggs. They should be stored in a cool place. Only clean eggs should be packed. It is not best to wash eggs, however, as that removes much of the coating of the egg and makes it more porous; it docs not keep so well. One gallon of the water glass will make a solu tion sufficient to preserve 60 dozen eggs, if they are properly packed. Lime water makes a fairly good preservative and is cheaper than the water glass. This solution may be made by slacking three pounds of lime in five gallons of water and allowing the mixture to stand un til the lime settles and the liquid is clear. The eggs should be placed in a clean earthen vessel and covered with the clear lime water. Frequently a pound of salt is added to this much lime water, but his mixture is said \o impart a slight lime taste to the eggs. It is rather too much to expect that eggs preserved for any length of time by any of these methods will be as perfect as fresh eggs. Feeding the Male. ANSWER—Your case is no uncom mon one; in fact, many cockerels when mated for the first time w itty a lot of females will be so gallant that they will fail to get their share of the feed, (if course, if you were using the hopper system of feeding there would be no trouble in that way, but since you are not, the plan for you to adopt is to fasten a* tin can directly on top of a stake, driven into the ground, having it Just as high as pos sible so the cockerel can eat out of it, which will be too high for the hens. There being no place for the hens to stand to reach it. they will be out of the game and the young inkle can eat at his leisure. I have done this for jysars in such cases and have found that they do much better for the trouble. Of course, it would have been much better if yon had beenTibie to have given him the better chance as soon as you noticed that he was not eating and before he had lost in flesh. Ducks.
