N, Y. Poultry Show
Interesting and Amusing Sketch
From Old Scrap
Book.
In looking over an old scrap book
wv find h report of a poultry show
held in New York City over 50 years
ago. and in order to give our younger
reader* an Idea of what breed* of
thoroughbred fowls obtained in those
days, we make a few extracts. The
report says:
"The show opened with large
crowds of visitors on hand. The col
lection is both large and varied. The
moment you enfet your ears arc
greeted with all kinds of discordant
notes proceeding from the throats of
geese, hens, roosters and all kinds jf
domestic fowls. The domestic fowis
occupy one floor and the games an
other. while the dogs and deer have
an apartment to themselves.
"The gigantic Shanghais. Chitta-
congs and Uochin t’hinas, all mem
bers of the same family, occupy sep
arate coop*.
"Wherever you turn bills of every
kind are presented to you—long bills,
short bills, broad bills and bills of
every kind are thrust out from be
tween the bars of their prisons seek
ing (in the language of the Scrip
tures) what they may devour. It i»
hardly necessary to say that their
exertions in this respect are very
poorly rewarded. Like human bipeds,
they are doomed to many disappoint
ments.
Collection Varied.
"The collection contains some ex
cellent. but a large number of miser
able specimens. Coop No. lift con
tained a large Shanghai rooster
weighing 3ft pounds and standing 2 \-l
feet high, at least. He is a powerful
bird, but we should say that the flesh
of a smuller fow l would be much more
tender ami palatable. The rooster is
said to be 9 months old.
"The Brainapootra is the name
given to another large species of im
ported domestic fowl, and by some t
is considered superior to any of those
mentioned above. They are not s*>
heavy and are excellent layers.
"The prizes ranged from $3 to V*.
and included guineas, pheasant.-
eagles, dogs, deer, sheep and hogs
besides the chickens, ducks, turkey-
and geese."
We think that the above extra is
will be of interest to many of on
readers—that they may see th*
names and the number of breeds then
and now.
At that time you could count the
different breeds of chickens upon the
Angers of your two hands. At • b»
present time we have about 150 va
rieties. including turkeys, ducks an 1
*ee»e—Quite a contrast in numbers.
Looks a little like we had been doing
something during that time. In far*,
I do not see how we can improve
much upon tie stock we now' have,
except to giv* a little more variety in
coloring.
