In looking over an old scrap book we find a report of a poultry show held in New York City ever 0 y'ears ago, and in order to give our younger readers an idea of what breeds of thoroughbred fowls obtained in those days, we make a few extracts. The report says: "The show opened with large crowds of visitors on hand. The col lection is both large and varied. The moment you enter your ears are greeted with all kinds of discordant notes proceeding from the throats of geese, hens, roosters and al! kinds of domestic fowls. The domestic fowls occupy one floor and the games an other, while the dogs and deer have an apartment to themselves. “The gigantic Shanghais. Chitta- congs and Cochin Chinas, all mem bers of the same family, occupy sep arate coops. “Wherever you turn bills of every kind are presented to you—long bills, short bills, broad bills and bills of r -rx # (0 dD JUDGE F. Collection Varied. ‘ Tiie collection contains some ex cellent, but a large number of miser— able specimens. Coop No. 110 con tained a large Shanghai rooster weighing 30 pounds and standing 2 1-2 feet high, at least. He is a powerful bird, but we should say that the flesh of a smaller fowl would be much more tender and palatable. The rooster it said to be 9 months old. “The Rramapootra is the name given to another large species of im ported domestic fowl, and by some It is considered superior to any of those mentioned above. They are not so heavy and are excellent layers. “The prizes ranged from $3 to $5, and included guineas, pheasants, eagles, dogs, deer, sheep and hogs, besides the chickens, ducks, turkeys and geese.” We think that the above extracts will be of interest to many of our readers—that they may see the names and the number of breeds then and now. At that time you could count the different breeds of chickens upon the fingers of your two hands. At the present time we have about 150 va rieties, including turkeys, ducks and geese—quite a contrast in numbers. Looks a little like we had been doing something during that time. In fact, I do not see how we can improve much upon the stock we now have, except to give a little more variety in coloring. Plymouth Rooks. EGOS from prize-winning E. B.
