There i.*« no reason in the world why the South should not produce more poultry. There are good paying markets ;i!l over this countrj for nice poultry and eggH; in fact, our home cities are never half supplied with good fresh stock. Tliis is particularly true of Georgia and Florida. Poultry is coh- lanily coming into these States in great numbers from Eaet Tennessee. We ail know, if we. stop for a mo ment to think, that there is no reason under the canopy wh\ these good States should be sending off for their supply of these products. Georgia has as gootf climatic conditions for the breeding and raising of poultry as any place we could think of. The winters arc mild, vo that hatching can he done at any time during the winter and the chicks successfully reared. In the summer we never have the extremes of heat that they do in the Central North and West. We know nothing of prostrations from heat. Such con ditions as these surely make for healthy chicken raising. Florida Poultry. Pouitry is simply one of the neg lected resources of these States. Farmers and others have occupied their time in what they considered much more profitable pursuits. But are they? We should sav thej have Hitt, in many instances, been doing as well a? thi y might have done with poultry While many a farmer was raising cotton and mort gaging his farm to live until he sold It in the fall, might have been inde pendent of all this if he had gone to the trouble to fix up a little for poul try in order that his wife and children might be earning about as much or more than he was off the farm. There is many a good woman who ha.s begged for a chance to show what she could do oixi of the chickens and turkeys, but has been choked off without so much as a chance to show her ability and the possibilities that lie dormant in the good old hen and her kin. If each of our farmers’ wives could be allowed the privilege of pro ducing just six eggs a day more than they have been in the years past, just think what it would amount to in a year! It would be over 15,000,060 dozen eggs tor every 100,000 fanner.*. This, in addition to what they are al ready getting, would mean something. If they have been supplying their own tables and a little more, just think what it would mean to the farmers themselves, and the resources of the State! Farmers, why can we not get down to business, and with just that little bit of effort see that a few more eggs are produced upon the place? We owe it to tlie country and we owe it to our families to be able flt get more off the farm. It can be dofix without any hindrance or detriment to the other farm operations, in fact, the chickens can be made to enrich the garden spot to a considerable extent. If good stock is kept it may he the means of developing a liking for the farm life in the boys who might otherwise consider the farm life hum drum, or drudgery.
