Amateur Poultry Raisers Should Not Be Discouraged Many Mistakes of the Beginner May Be Avoided—Good. Sound Advice. “Knowledge la of two kinds,” says Bo*will. "We know the subject our selves or we U -.ow where we can find the information upon it.” Of the two kinds of knowledge the first is, beyond doubt, the more valua ble, but it Is only acquired by actual experience, oftentimes dearly bought; whereas many of the mistakes and discouragements met with by the be ginner may be avoided If he will take counsel of those who have sounded all the pitfalls and located all the imped iments on the road to success. A common failing with those who are new in the poultry business is to assume that because an undertaking appears to them simple, no prepara tory study is nece&sary to its success ful prosecution, and they hold lightly the advice of those who have mas tered it. Such persons are met In all walks of life, but are never found ex celling in any vocation. There is no task or pursuit, however simple, but what wijl be better understood and performed with more case and satis faction after close investigation of the study. There are no two persons that will do things alike. Each will em ploy different methods to secure the same results And he who brings to his task the greatest amount of care and thoroughness is the one who will have the fullest measure of success. The Turning Point. This is the turning point between success and failure, and we want to caution our readers against large ex penditures to equip a poultry plant unless they have tested matters upon a moderate scale and found that they possessed the elements of the great success and the proper energy to ap ply them. The old adage. Where there is a will there is a way, is a good one, but you want to be sure that you are endowed with the will, and perhaps we had better add the proper kind of a will. Some say that we never know' what we can do until we try it. That is true, but let your work be Increased gradually and not spasmodically. Raise 300 chickens this year and 500 or 600 next year and do not do as some have attempted and jump from 100 to 5,000, with failiie as a result. There is no question about tbe money to be made by laying hens, etc., but it must be done In a buainess-like man ner. Chickens Crop-bound. Judge Marshall — 1 have a White Orpington cock and hen that seem to have something the matter with their crops. They seem to be bloated. 1 caught them and I find the crop aeems too full and hard and stays that way all the time, whether they have had any feed or not. I have been feeding whole oats prin cipally and giving them rye blades for green stuff. What do you think is the matter and what would be a good remedy? They are valuable fowls and I should like to get them in good shape. Thanking you in advance for the information, I am, your* truly, Augusta. Ga. S. B. LANE. ANSWER.—Your chickens are crop-bound, caused by a stoppage of the passage from the crop to the giz zard by some little bulky matter that falls to pass on. We are inclined to think that it is some of your long blades of rye, perhaps aided by the rough grains of oats. In fact, you are giving them pretty rough rations. We would advise a complete change in the feed to a dry mash. Give each one two teaspoons of castor oil. which may be the means of emptying the crop. If it does not and they still seem full and hard, the only course left Is to open the crop at one side by cutting a slit with a sharp knife. To do this successfully it is best to open the outer skin in one place and the inner one a little to one side of the other, so that tfie openings will not come in just the same place. Clean the crop thoroughly of all Its con tents and see that the real obstruc tion Is removed, which may be just at the point where the food leaves the crop. Rinse It out thoroughly with water into which a little carbolic acid has been dropped—just three or four drops to the pint. Then close each layer of skin with a few stitches and feed nothing but bread and milk for at least three days. Ducks.
