Average Egg Yield \f
Per Hen Per Year
Highest Mark Reached in Australian
Contest Was
247.
Again and again the question is
asked: What is a good average yield
of eggs per hen per year?
In the great Australian egg-laying
contest conducted by the Government
there were 100 pens of six hens each
in competition. The contest cover
ed one year, and the eggs laid per
pen ranged from 1,481 down to 721,
or an average per hen of 247 the
highest and 120 the lowest, which
would he 183 for the average hen out
of the 600. Or, taking the record of
the lowest hens in the contest. 120
eggs per year at 25 cents per dozen
would mean 32.50 per hen. Allowing
$1.25 for feed, you would have a profit
of $1.25 per hen per year. Or, allow
ing 25 cents per hen for looking after
them, and you have just a big round
dollar profit. Allowing 50 cents for
the price of your hen and you see
you have made 100 per cent profit.
Good Profit.
in what other kind of business with
out any element of speculation in it
can you beat this for showing? Tak
ing the old method of figuring results:
Net profit on one hen, $1; net profit
on 1,000 hens. $1,000. With an ex
perienced poultryman. this can be
done. It is not an unreasonable propo
sition to carry out.
Some of you will be desirous to
know what kind of chickens did thff
best laying. We have not the room
to give the table complete, but w'ill
say that the first prize pen w as Black
Ij&ngshans; second and third. White
Leghorns: fourth. Golden Wyan-
dottes. and fifth. Black Orpingtons.
Included in the bo6t 25 pens were ten
Leghorn pens strengthening their
reputation of being egg machines. The
monthly laying was: April. 5,645
eggs: May, 6,854 eggs; June, 7,032
eggs: July. 9,548 eggs; August, 12,292
eggs; September, 11,940 eggs; Octo
ber, 11,294 eggs; November, 9,548
eggs; December, 8,466 eggs; January.
8,084 eggs: February, 6,948 eggs;
March, 5.278 eggs; grand total, 102,209
eggs from 600 hens. You wdll note
how the egg season varies from this
country.
Orpingtons.
F J. Marshall: Can you tell me
something about the Orpingtons. 1
am green about poultry.
MRS. J. J. M.
Wadley. Ga.
Answer: The Orpingtons consist of :
Buff. Black and White varieties. The !
most important and extensively bred
is the Buff. The first Orpingtons ;
were imported from Kngland a few !
years ago. The Buffs have become
quite popular over this country, and
very deservedly so, for they are a
first-class fowl. In shape they have
very long, round, deep bodies with
very full breasts. The length of the
hackle feathers flowing well upon
the back give that section the ap
pearance of being short, when, in
reality, it is not. The body is car
ried somewhat horizontal, in that par
ticular it is entirely different from :
the Plymouth Rock in type. It is deep
from the back down through the \
breast and body. In size they are j
Just about one-half pound heavier
than tile Plymouth Rocks. Cocks, 10
pounds; hens, 8 pounds; cockerels,
8 1-2 pounds, and pullets, 7 pounds.
The comb is single and medium in
size, perhaps a trifle larger than the
Plymouth Rocks. Tails are full and
well rounded in the male and carried
rather loy. In females the tail is
broad and full, and is carried medium
low. Legs and skin of all the va
rieties are white or flesh color with
a tinge of pink on the sides of legs
of males. In color of plumage the
Buff should be a golden buff in all
sections, but in most cases it is very
hard to obtain. The black should be
lustrous beetle or greenish black as
free from purple barring as possible.
When you get them about right they
are a most handsome fowl. The
Whites are quite hard to breed true
to color. In color they should be a
milky white with no tinge of cream
or brass, as is seen in the yellow-
legged varieties. The Orpingtons are
a good thrifty fowd and splendid lay
ers.
