Address of value to their own

If farmers and poultry raisers would
si five as hard to find the auccesaful
way to handle Jittle chicks as they do
to roaster other things frequently of
much Jes» importance, we would see
thousands of good chickens go to our
markets in the place of filling an un
timely grave.
By way of warning. I might say
that tlte three-mo.kt Harmful things
the chicks have to contend with are
cold, wet and sloppy feed. In other
words, keep them dry. Feed cracked
grain and small seeds mixed, andi feed
dry. If you will have the native, to
stick to this kind of feed in their bill
of fare any length of. time, ypu will
succeed. Keep coops, houses and runs
strictly clean and fresh and do not
crowd. This m an old story to some

at our reactors, but to thousands of
<4.iiera_il will mean a radical change
In methods.
To give you an idea of how valu
able I consider the dry feeding meth
od, J will say that had I known twen
ty years ago what 1 do now about it.
and practiced it during that time of
my breeding of pure bred chickens, I
would have made $5 in place of every
$1 I did make. But someone asks
why 1 make such a statement? Sim
ply because I could not raise half the
chickens I hatched, even with hens,
and there seemed to be more differ
ence than th^t with brooder chick*.
My trade demanded twice as many
eggs and stock as I could produc*
under the soft or wet food theory.
('hicks under the new method >f
dry feed need a constant supply of
good grit In some form, either very
coarse, sharp sand or prepared grit.
Well supplied with these few essen
tials, there will be no trouble. Do
not be In a rush to feed them as soon
as they are out of the shell; better
wait two days If you want health.

Caponizing.
Judge Marshall; I raise White Leg
horns and White Wyandottea. and
have a good many cockerels of both I
breeds coming on that I snail have U
put on the market in some shape, «i* I
I want to keep the pullets for egg - i
producers. I have been thinking of j
caponizing a lot of them. Do you
think It will pay me to vo to the extra
trouble In the Increase 1n price and
weight? MRS. ,J. J. MORRIS.
Quitman. Ga.
ANSWER—I do not believe it will
pay you to "o to the trouble to capon-
lze at all. and I know It will not pay |
on the Leghorns. They are to# sma 1
a breed to make capons worth your j
while to trouble with them. The larg- I
er breeds, such as the Brahmas and j
Cochins and Rocks, make the finest
capons. Tt would hardly pay you *o
go into the business unless you al
ready had a good market for them,
for the average hotel will not pav
enough extra to pay for the trouble ;
and extra time and work it takes.
Good capons bring a fancy price on i
the New York and Boston markets,
but it would not nay one down here to
run the rtok of shipping so far.
