If farmers and poultry raisers would strive as hard to find the successful way to handle little chicks as they do to master other things frequently of much less importance, we would see thousands of good chickens go to our markets In the place of filling an un timely grave. By way of warning, 1 might say that the three most harmful things the chicks have to contend with are cold, wet and sloppy feed. In other words, keep them dry. Peed cracked grain and small seeds mixed, and feed dry. If you will have the nerve to stick to this kind of feed in their bill of fare any length of time, you will fwjcoeed. Keep coops, house# and runs strictly clean and fresh and do not crowd. This is an old story to some of our readers, but to thousands of others it will mean a radical change In methods. To give you an Idea of how valu able I consider the dry feeding meth od, 1 will say that had I known twen ty years ago what I do now about it. and practiced it during that time of my breeding of pure bred chickens. I would have made $f> in place of every $j 1 did make. But someone asks why I make such a statement? Sim ply because 1 could not raise half the chickens I hatched, even with hens, and there seemed to be more differ ence than that with brooder chicks. My trade demanded twice as many j egg# and stock as I could prodiu- under the soft or wet food theory. j Chicks under the new method jf • dry feed need a constant supply of; good grit in Home form, either very j coarse, sharp sand or prepared grit. ] Well supplied with these few essen- . tials. there w ill hr- no trouble. Do i not be in a rush to feed them as soon I as they are out of the shell; better I wait two days if you want health. | • *NK large downstairs room for two; private bath, hot and cold water; elec tric lights; terms reasonable. 223 North Jackson. Jmhge Marshall: I raise White leg horns and White Wyandotte#, and have a good many cockerels of both breKl.s coming on that 1 shall have put on the market in some shape, as I want to keep the pullets for egg- producers. 1 have been thinking of caponizing a lot of tharn. Do you think it will pay me to *o to the extru trouble in the increase in price and weight? MRS. ,1. J. MORRIS. Quitman. Ga. ANSWER I do not believe it will pay you to ~o to the trouble to capon- Ir.e at all. and I know it will not pay on the Leghorns. They are too smad a breed to make capon# worth your while to trouble with them. The larg er breeds, such as the Brahmas and Cochins and Rocks, make the finest capons. It would hardly pay you *o go into the business unless you al ready had a good market for them, for the average hotel will not pav enough extra to pay for the trouble and extra time and work it takes. Good tanons bring a fancy price on the New York and Boston markets, but it would not r *ay one down here run the risk of shipping so far.
