Chicks Die Because
Of Mismanagement
0 r Carelessness
Farmers Should Strive to Find Suc
cessful Way to Handle
Them.
(’hicks ar«- being hatched by hun
dreds all over the country al this
time, many of which will never live to
reach the age of value to their own
ers. owing to mismanagement or care
lessness.
If farmers and poultry raisers would
strive as hard to find the successful
way to handle little chicks as they do
to master other things frequently of
much less importance, we would see
thousands of good chickens go to our
markets in the place of filling an un
timely grave.
By way of warning, i might sa\
that tiie three most harmful thin y
the chicks have to contend with are
cold, wet and sloppy feed. In other
words, keep them dry. Feed cracked
grain and small seeds mixed, and feed
dry. If you will have the nerve to
stick to this kind of feed in their hill
of fare any length of time, you will
succeed. Keep coops, houses and runs
strictly dean and fresh and do not
crowd. This ia an old story to some

of our readers, but to thousands of
others It will mean a radical change,
in methods.
To give you an idea of how valu
able I consider the dry feeding meth
od, I will say that had I known twen
ty .sears ago what 1 do now about it.
and practiced it during that time of
my breeding of pure bred chickens. I
would have matte Jo in place of every
$1 l did make. But someone asks
why I make such a statement'.’ Sim-
fcpl.V because 1 could not raise half the
chickens I hatched, even with liens,
and there seemed to be more differ
ence than that with brooder chicks.
My trade demanded ttvke as many
egg* and stock as 1 could prod-uc *
under the soft or wet food theory.
(’hicks under the new method >f
dry feed need a constant supply of
good grit in some form, either very
coarse, sharp sand or prepared grit.
Well supplied with these few essen
tials. there will be no trouble. Di
not be in a rush to feed them as soon I
as they are out of the snell; bette-I
wait two days if you want healQi. t
Caponizing.
Judige Marshall; I raise White Leg- |
horns and White Wyandottes. and
have a good many cockerels of both j
breeds coming on that I shall have U.
put on the market In some shape, as
I want to keep the pullets for egg- !
producers. I have been thinking of
caponizing a lot of them. Do you
think it will pay me to vo to the extra
trouble in the increase in price and j
weight? MRS. J. J. MORRIS.
Quitman. Ga.
ANSWER -I do not believe it will!
pav you to ~q t o the trouble to capon-
lze at all, and 1 know it will not pay
on the Leghorns. They are too sm.pl
a breed to make capons worth your
while to trouble with them. The larg- j
m breeds, such as the Brahmas and
Cochins and Rocks, make the finest i
capons. It would hardly pay you *o j
go into the business unless you al- 1
ready had a good market for them, j
for the average hotel will not pav
enough extra to pay for the trouble;
and extra time and work it takes.
Good capons bring a fancy price on
the New York and Boston markets,
but it would not nay one down here to
run the risk of shipping so far.
