Much of the waste of the farm can
thus be converted into valuable mon
ey products. The manure, if care
fully waved, will make a valuable
compost for garden and orchard. In
fact. heriH kept in an orchard will
often cause the orchard to produce a
crop when it might otherwise be
eaten up by insects, for the poultry
will destroy all insects that infest an
orchard If they are given access to
them.
Many localities are not adapted to
cereals nr cotton, but all are suitable
for poultry and will aid in bringing
the barren places to bloom. You

some of his acquaintances call it. For
some time he gave his spare moments
night and morning to them because
he was fond of them, but now he
works with them because he is mak

and labor, lie now has on hand
something like 1,000 White Leghorns
and is marketing at this time an av

fooling with chickens for a good
while, but he has quit fooling and is
making it a business now.
Poultry is a good thing to take hold
of, because it oo*ts but little to start, 1
and also but little to maintain a.mod
erate flock compared with the returns
of the average flock. Poultry, being
an all-the-yoar-round producer of
revenue, makes a splendid business
with which to meet current expenses,,
both upon the farm and in the village.
Many farmers who are each year bor-1
rowing money for this very purpose I
could cut it out with poultry.
Scaly Leg and Rheumatism.
Judge F. J. Marshall: I hav • one,
cock and two hens in my flock that
seem to walk as if they had rheuma

tell me what the trouble is and a rem
edy for it. They seem to be hardy
otherwise, eat well, and one of the
hens is laying. MRS. O. C.
Benton. Miss.
REPLY.—Your chickens are trou
bled with what is called scaly legs, a
roughness caused by a small parasite
that works under the scales of the
shanks, throwing out a little white
deposit which sticks to the outside of
the leg and hardens. When’ allowed
to go on for months, it often becomes J
