POULTRY, PET ahd LIVE STOCK J The Georgian’s Rent Bulletin
Poultry Will Yield
Larger Returns Than
Any Other Industry
Can B* Profitably Handled by Wom
en and Children—Money in
Back Yard.
Poultry for the farmer will yield
more ready money at all seasons of
tlie year than any Other •similar in
vestment.
It Is something that enn be handled
hy the good wife, with the aid of the
children, If she he so disposed. The
work, while important and particu
lar, is not too heavy for the women.
Much of the waste of the farm can
thus be converted into valuable mon
ey products. The manure, if care
fully saved, will make a valuable
compost for garden and orchard, in
fact, hens kept in an orchard will
often cause the orchard to produce a
crop when it might otherwise be
eaten up hy insects, for the poultry
will destroy all insects that infest an
orchard if they are given access to
them.
Many localities are not adapted to
cereals <>r cotton, but all are suitable
for poultry and will aid in bringing
the barren place* to bloom. You
hardly know what you can accom
plish until you set your head to do a
thing and are determined there shall
be no such thing as fall.
I know' a druggist doing business
in Atlanta who lives in one of the
suburbs reached by a car line, who
^
# <o> <o>
has been fooling witn chickens, as
some of hi* acquaintances call it. For
some time he gave his spare moments
night and morning to them because
hr was fond of them, but now he
works with them because he is mak
ing them pay him well for his time
and labor. He now has on hand
something like 1,000 White Leghorn*
did is marketing at this time an av
erage of 30 dozen eggs per day to spe
cial customers who are willing to pay
for good eggs. This man has been
fooling with chickens for a good
while, hut he has quit fooling and is
making it a business now.
Poultry is ;i good thing to take hold
of, because it cowts hut little to start.'
and also but little to maintain a mod- j
erate flock compared with the returns
of the average flock. Poultry, being
an all-the-year-round producer of;
revenue, makes a splendid business!
with which to meet current expenses,
both upon the farm and in the village. !
Many farmers who are each year bor- j
rowing money for this very purpose i
could cut it out with poultry.
Scaly Leg and Rheumatism.
Judge F. J. Marshall: 1 have onej
cock anti two hens in my flock that j
seem to walk as if they had rheuma
tism. Their legs are rough and dou
ble the size they ought to he. Can you
tell me what the trouble Is and a rem
edy for it. They seem to be hardy
otherwise, eat well, and one of the
hen* is laying. MRS. (\ C.
Benton, Miss.
REPLY.—Your t hickens are trou
bled with w’hat is called scaly legs, a
roughness caused hy a small parasite
that works under the scales of the
shanks, throwing out a little white
deposit which sticks to the outside of
the leg and- hardens. When allowed
to go on for months, it often becomes
so thick that it will cause lameness or
apparent rheumatism, as In the case
with youm. Treatment should be
commenced as soon as noticed on a
single specimen and before it has
time to spread through the flock. Of
course, in your case, not being ac
quainted with the trouble, you did not
anticipate it in time to check it before
It had made such serious advance
ment. The first move is to dip the
shanks into a can of kerosene up to,
but not onto, the feathers. This
should he repeated twice a week un
til entirely cleaned off down to the
solid skin and flesh. When it has
thus been cleaned off. give an occa
sional coating of vaseline, which will
soon put them in their normal condi
tion.
