Chicks Die Because
Of Mismanagement
0 r Carelessness
Farmers Should Strive to Find Suc
cessful Way to Handle
Them.
Chicks ^r#‘ being hatched b\ hun
dreds all over the country at this
time, many of whi« b will never live :o
reach the age of value to their own
ers owing to mismanagement orcare-
lcaane.m.
If farmers and poultry raisers would
strive uh hard to find the successful
way to handle little Thicks up they do
to master other thing* frequently of
much less importance, w< would see
thousands of good chickens go to our
markets in the place of filling an un
timely grave
By way of warning, i might *av
that the three most harmful tiling*
the chicks hfive to contend with HP-
cold. wet and sloppy feed. In other
words, keep Ihem dry. Feed cracked
grain and small seeds mixed, and feed
dry. If you will have the nerve 1 o
stick to this kind of feed in their bill
of fare any lenglh of time you vt ill
succeed. Keep < ooptq houses «nd runs
strictly clean and fresh and do not
erod’d. This l* an old story to sorn<

JUDGE
F. J
MARSHALL
of our readers, but to thousands of
pthers It will mean a radical change
In methods.
To give you an idea of how valu
able I consider the dry feeding meth
od, I will say that had I known twon
ts year* ago what I do now about it
nod .practiced it during that time of
my bn * digig of pure bred chickens, I
would have mad* $5 In place of every
$1 I did make. Hut someone asks
v. h\ I make such a statement? Sim
ply because 1 could not raise half the
chicken* 1 hatched, even with hens,
and there seemed to he more differ
ence than that with brooder chicks.
My trade demanded twice as many
eggn and stock as I could produce
under the soft or wet food theory.
Chicks under the new method >f
dry feed need a constant supply of
good grit In »om** form, either very
coarse, sharp sand or prepared grit.
Well supplied* with these few essen
tials, there will be no trouble. Do
not be in a rush to feed them as soon
as they are out of the shell; bette r '
wait two days if you want health.
Caponizing.
Judge Marshall; I raise White Leg
horn* and White Wyandotte**, and
have a good many cockerels of both
breeds coming on that I shall have i.
put on the market In some shape, a*
I want to keep the pullets for egg-
producers. I have been thinking of
caponizing a lot of them. Do you
think it will pay me to fro to the extra
trouble In the increase In price and
weight? MRS. J. J. MORRIS.
Quitman. (7a.
ANSWER—i do not believe It will
pay you to o to the trouble to capon-
ize at all, and I know It will not pay
on the Leghorns. They are too sma-1
a breed to make capons worth your
While to trouble with them. The larg
er breeds, such as the Brahmas and
Cochin* and Rocks, make the finest
capons. It would hardly pay you *o
go into the business unless you al
ready had a good market for them,
for the average hotel will not pav
enough extra to pay for the trouble
and extra time and work it takes.
Good capons bring a fancy price on
the New Y<*rk and Boston market*,
but it would not »'ay one down here L>
run the risk of shipping so far.
