Poultry for the farmer will y
more ready money at all seasons of
the yeac than any other similar in

It is something that can be handled
by the good wife, with the aid of the
children, if she be so disposed. The
work, '\ bile important and particu
lar, is not too heavy for the women.
Much of the waste of the farm can
thus be converted into valuable mon

crop when it might otherwise be
eaten up by insects, for the poultry
will do*troy all insects that infest an
orchard ii they arc given access to
them.
Many localities are not adapted to
cereals <>r cotton, but all are suitable

the barren places to bloom. You

some of his acquaintances call it. For
some time he gave his spare moments

erage of 30 dozen eggs per day to spe
cial customers who are willing to pay
lor good eggs. 'Phis man has been
fooling whh chickens for a good
while, hut he has quit fooling and is
making it a business now.
Poultry is a good thing to take hold
of, because it costs but little to start,
and also but little to maintain a mod
erate flock compared with the returns
of the average flock. Poultry, being
an all-the-year-round producer of
revenue, makes a Splendid business
with which to meet current expenses,
both upon tiie farm and in the village.
Many farmers who are each year bor
rowing money for (his very purpose
could cut it out with poultry.
Scaly Leg and Rheumatism.
Judge F. J. Marshall: i have one
cock and two hens in my flock that
seem to wdIk as if they had rheuma
tism. Their legs are rough and dou
ble the size they ought to be. Can you
tell me what the trouble is and a rem
edy for it. They seem to be hardy
otherwise, eat well, and one of the
hens is laying. MRS. C. C.
Benton, Miss.
REPLY.—Your chickens are trou
bled with what is called scaly legs, a
roughness caused by a small parasite
that works under the scales of the
shanks, throwing out a little white
deposit which sticks to the outside of
the leg and hardens. When allowed
to go on for months, it often becomes
so thick that it will cause lameness or
apparent rheumatism, as in the case
with your-. Treatment should be
commenced as soon as noticed on a
single specimen and before it has
time to spread through the flock. Of
course, in your case, not being ac
quainted with the trouble, you did not
anticipate it in time to check it before
it had made such serious advance
ment. The first move is to dip the
shanks into a can of kerosene up to,
but not dnto, the* feathers. This
should be repeated twice a week un
til entirely cleaned off down to the
solid skin and llesh. When it lias
thus been cleaned off. give an occa
sional coating of vaseline, which will
soon put them in their normal condi
tion.
