The pea comb is a triple comb
or a series of three straight comb)
paralleling each other, and joined tc
each other at the base, each having*
small but distinct serreations through
out their length. The two outer
rows being lower and thinner than
the (enter one. the points formed in
this way being so low and broad
u*. ! that they resemble rows of peas,
hence the name given them. This
< <>m* ihoiild fit close ;ind solid upon
| the head, rather than to stand up
—— from the head and Incline to turn
from side to side
new
\
The breeds having this comb are
the Brahmas, Buckeyes, all the Cor
nish and Sumatra. The most common
defect in these combs is the twisting
from sifi*' to side near th;- middle. In
other words, it is a kirik In all three
of the rows of points and makes
the comb decidedly out of line when
viewed from in front.
Another kind of comb that is often
seen in one where the middle part
of the combs show ;tll right and is
good shape in itself, but the sides
are very faintly outlined and would
almost be taken lor a single comb
at first ight In mating up such

and then the trouble has commenced.
The V i ornb is a very peculiar one
and looks much like a pair of horns
standing up from the center of the
head. They show but very slightly
upon the heads of the hens. < »n the
well matured miles it shows up all
right. The comb in these breeds is,
however, not considered a valuable
asset, so that the smaller it is the
better it is liked.

which is not very much of a definite
comb and is found only upon th#se
two breeds of relatively small im
portant The comb is really of more
Importance than is generally consid
ered as a distinguishing feature of
the breed or variety it represents.
'I’ake. for example, the Light Bruh-
rna, ihe variety which stands at the
head of our list of thoroughbred
fowls for recognized type in breed
ing and put a sort of mongrel type
of comb upon it and w r hat would it
b< worth? or the Plymouth Rock
and pu« a wrinkled turn-over son I
of a comb upon it and a Rock man
would simply la;igh at you and want
to know what it was mixed with.
It frequently occurs, however, that
some of the larger combed hens of a
variety are the heaviest layers. That
is, they may have a comb almost
too heavy for the breed, although of
the right type, an<$f be greatest layers
of the flock!
Questions and Answers.
Judge Marshall:—is It a good plan
to bleed pullets back to their sire? 1
Some tell me it Is Just the thing to
do, while others say it is detrimental
to health. I would be very glad to
have your opinion of it.
Monroe, Oa. S. J. R.
ANSWER: — While expert breeders
of long experience take the chances
of weakened vitality in the offspring
for the sake of gaining some valuable
points they have been striving hard
for. yet. as a rule, it is not good
policy to make a business of it. Un
less you are sure you are going to
be able to intensify a number of good
qualities in the next generation, you
had better not take the risk of mul
tiplying a lot of serious defects.
You see. it is close inbreeding and
is not a good policy for those who j
are not working for the very highest j
in type to undertake or run the risk j
of for health's sake. Of course, it is 1
better to breed that way than to :
breed brother and sister together.
