Small Investment; Big Profit in Georgian “Want Ads”—Read for Profit—Use for Results If SL POULTRY, PET LIVE STOCK r Feeding Chickens K • For Egg Production Should Begin When the Chick Hatched—Lay Founda tion Early. wtip In ot omrr pd, i mly the iifa arity. tor 'egg product! •need when the ind there should jump from wtart »'ords. to lay the f and continuous la> ust be well nourish It is hatched unt ■oormo One of the common complaints i»i the fall is that the pullets do not com mence to lay as early as they should. The reason is they are not ready to lay; they are not fully developed. They have not had sufficient nourish ment. and therefore run a month or two over the usual laying period. A constant and varied supply of good, wholesome foods is the remedy that should be applied, and we know of no better way to accomplish the end sought than by the hopper feed ing process. Where the pullet as a chirk has been hopper fed with good mixed grains and beefscrap, where a large flock is maintained and the sup ply of insects is not sufficient to give the animal matter needed, the chances are that it will begin to lay early and keep it up through the winter. When the feeding Is done at Inter vals it is a difficult matter to feed all that is needed, and as a conse quence the chick does not make the best possible growth. To make good winter layers, do not yard or confine the pullets too eurly, hut allow them to range as long is possible. They will then settle down to steady egg production when they are cooped and will continue through th*- winter. A convenient slzo fob 50 growing chicks would be 12 by 20 inches at the top and 2 hy 20 inches at the bottom and 20 Inches deep, with i base extending 3 inches on each ffde, with 3-Inch side to keep the grain from falling out; an Inch sli at the bottom of the hopper to allov grain to come out into the tray part where It Is picked out by the chicks The hopper should be kept under shelter of some sort to keep the- fee: dry, which prevents it spoiling. A chicken may eat a little more the first day or two, but after that I do not believe ft takes as much to feed them in that way as it does to allow them to become 1 ravenously hungry and then gorge t hem si* Ives; the re peating of which often causes indi gestion and serious results. Questions and Answers- Judge Marshall: <’an you tell me of some way to get soil stain from tip i shells of white eggs? I keep a fine lot of White. Leghorns, laying pure j white eggs, but flic red soil here i stains them so it can not be washed off so it will not show when sent to ! market. If you can bo of ;»nv help to me, I shall certainly he thankful for the service. K. C. B. Rome, Ga. ANSWER -It would be a pretty hard matter to get anything that will readily take these mud stains off the shell without injuring the shell or its contents. We see no reason why any considerable number of your eggs should be stained. You should pro vide good nesting places for your hens, filling them with good litter of some kind that will keep them off the ground. You might try dipping them in alcohol and then rubbing them with a clean cloth. If nice, roomy nest boxes are provided and put in rather dark or .^eluded places, you should have but little trouble in get ting all your hens to use them, course, you must have a sufficient number of them, so that liens will not get tired of waiting for room and be obliged to take to the ground. 0 0 BUSINESS GUIDE O O Ready Reference for the Business Man, the Artisan And the Public in General The Georgian’s Rent Bulletin Auction Sales of Furniture and Household Goods.
