Another kind of comb that is often seen in one where the middle part of the combs show all right and is good shape in itself, but the sides are very faintly outlined and Would almost be taken for a single comb at first sight. In rpating up such stock for breeding purposes one is very likely lo get some single combs and then the (rouble has commenced. The V comb Is a very peculiar one and looks much like a pair of horns standing up from the center of the head. They show but very' slightly upon the heads of the hens. On the well matured males it shows up all right. The comb in these breeds is, however, not considered a valuable us Set, so that the smaller It is the •better it is liked. Value by Judges. The comb is only valued at 4 points out of the 100. The breeds having this form of comb are as follows: All the Polish (which are eight varie ties). the Houdane, Orevecoeurs, and La Flee he, French varieties. Then we have the Malay and the Silkie, with the strawberry comb, w hich is not very much of a definite comb and is found only upon these two breeds of relatively small im portance. The comb is really of more importance than is generally consid ered as a distinguishing feature of th.- breed or variety it represents. Take, for example, the Light Brah ma, the variety which stands at the; head of our list of thoroughbred! fowls for recognized type in breed-j ing and put a sort of mongrel type of comb upon it and what would it be worth? Or the Plymouth Rock and put a wrinkled turn-over sort of a ' omb upon It and a Rock man would simply laugh at you and want to know what it was mixed with. It frequently occurs, however, that some of the larger combed heiys of a variety are the heaviest layers. That Is, they may have a comb almost too heavy for the breed, although of the right type, and be greatest layers of the flock. Questions and Answers. Judge Marshall:—Is it a good plan to breed pullets back to their sire? Some tell me it la just the thing to do, while others say it is detrimental to health. I would be very glad to have your opinion of it. Monroe, Ga. S. J. R. ANSWER While expert breeders of long experience take the chances of weakened vitality in the offspring for the sake of gaining some valuable points they have been striving hard for, yet, as a rule, it is not good policy to make a business of it. Un less you are sure you are going to be able to intensify a number of good qualities in the next generation, you had better not take the risk of mul tiplying a lot of serious defects. You see, it is close inbreeding an,d is not a good policy for those who are not working for the very highest in type to undertake or run the risk of for health’s sake. Of course, it is better to breed that way than to breed brother and sister together. I ROOM AND BOARD^ COZY INN.
