Downes, 29!* Marietta Street Pitojica M 3146. Atlanta 4932 4-6-11 Defects in Combs Of Chickens Often Mar Beauty of Fowls Should Exercise Great Care in Breeding—Value by Judges. The pea comb 1* « triple < otnb, or a «crie* of- three straight combs paralleling ♦•aril othej-, and Joined to ea,ch ofher at the base, each having small but dUtlm-i Kerrealions, through out their length. The two outer rows being lower and thinner than the venter one, the points formed in this way being so low and broad that they resemble rows of peas, hence -the name given them This uiitTih should fit close and solid upbn fhe* head, rather than to stand up from the head and incline to turn from side to side. Tht* breeds having thiv comb are the Rrahmas, Buckeyes, all the t'or- nish and Kurnatra. The most common defect In these combs is the twisting from side to side near th - middle, in other words, It Is a kink tn all three of the rows of points and make* the comb decidedly out of line when viewed from in front Another kind of comb that iv often seen in one where the mtddle part of the combs show all right and Is good shape in itself, but the sides are very faintly outlied and would almost he taken for a single comb at, first sight. In mating up such stock for breeding purposes one iv very likely to get some single CQnibs and then the trouble has qommenced. # as> <b>! The \\ comb is a very peculiar one and looks much like a pair of horns standing up from the center of the head. They show hut very slightly upon the h^ads of the hens. On the well matured males it shows up all right. The comb in these breeds is, however, not considered a valuable asset, so that the smaller it is the better It la liked. Value by Judges. The comb is only valued at 4 points out of the 100. The breeds having this form of comb are as follows: All the Polish (which are eight varie ties). the Houdflns, Crevecoeurs, and LaFleche, French varieties. Then we have the Malay and th fiilkie, with the strawberry comb. which is not very much of a definite comb and is found only upon these two breeds of relatively small im portance. The comb is really of more importance than is generally consld- 1 red as a distinguishing feature of the breed or variety it represents. Take, for example, the Light Brah ma, the variety which M inds at'the head of our list of thoroughbred fowls for recognized type in breed ing and put a sort of mongrel type of tomb upon It and what would it be worth? Or the Plymouth Rock and put a wrinkled turn-over sort of a comb upon it and a Rock man would simply laugh at you and want to know what it was mixed with. It frequently occurs, however, that some of the larger combed hens of a variety are the heaviest layers. That is, they may have a comb almost too heavy for the breed, although of the right type, and be greatest layers of the flock. Questions and Answers. Judge Marshall:—Is it a good plan to breed pullets back to their sire? Some tell me it is juat the thing to do, while others say it is detrimental to health, i would be very glad to have your opinion of it. Monroe, (»a. S. J. R. ANSWER: While expert breeders of long experience take the chances of weakened vitality in the offspring for the sake of gaining some valuable points they have been striving hard for. yet. as a rule, it is not good policy to make a business of it. Un less you are sure you are going to be able to intensify a number of good qualities* in the next generation, you had better not take the risk of mul tiplying a lot of serious defects. Yqu see. it is close inbreeding and is not a good policy for those who are not working for the very highest in type to undertake or run the risk of for health’s sake. Of course, it is better to breed that way than to breed brother and sister together. ROOM AND BOARD. COZY INN.
