" J IIEARSTS SUNDAY AMERICAN, ATLANTA, OA., SUNDAY, MAY 11, 1013. 3 B Small Investment; Big Profit in American “Want Ads”—Read for Profit—Use for Results [ POULTRY, PET aid LIVE STOCK A Feeding Chickens For Egg Production Should Begin When the Chick Is Hatched—Lay Founda tion Early. Feeding for egg production shoulcf be commenced when the chick is hatched, and there should not be a ekip or a jump from start to finish. In other words, to lay the foundation for early and continuous layers the ^chicken must be well nourished from the time it is hatched until laying maturity. One of the common complaints in the fall is that the pullets do not com mence to lay as early as they should. The reason is they are not ready to lay; they are not fully developed. • They have not had sufficient nourish - ment, and therefore run a month or two over ^he usual laying period. A constant and varied supply of good, wholesome foods is the remedy that should be applied, and we know of no better way to accomplish the end sought than by the hopper feed ing process. Where the pullet as a chick has been hopper fed with good mixed grains and beefscrap, where a large flock is maintained and the sup ply of insects is not sufficient to give the animal matter needed, the chances are that it will begin to lay early and keep it up through the winter. When the feeding is done at inter vals it is a difficult matter to feed all that is needed, and as a conse 7 quence the chick does not make the best possible growth. To make good winter layers, do not yard or confine the pullets too early, but allow' them to range as long as possible. They will the-n settle down to steady egg production w'hen they are cooped and will continue through the winter. A convenient size for 50 growing chicks would be 12 by 20 inches at the top and 2 by 20 inches at the bottom and 20 inches deep, with a base extending 3 inches on each side, with, 3-inch side to keep the grain from falling out; ,an inch slit at the bottom of the hopper to allow grain to come out into the tray part, where it is picked out by the chicks. The hopper should be kept under a shelter of some sort to keep the feed dry, which prevents it spoiling. A chicken may eat a little more the first day or two. but after that I do not believe it takes as much to feed them in that way as it does to allow them to become ravenously hungry • and then gorge themselves; the re peating of which often causes indi gestion and serious results. Questions and Answers. Judge Marshall: Can you tell me of some way to get soil stain from the shells of white eggs? I -keep'a fine lot of White Leghorns, laying pure white eggs, but the red soil here stains Jlim so it can not be washed •off so It will not show vvfcen sent to market. If you can be of any help to • me, I shall certainly be thankful tor the service. Rome, Ga. ANSWER—It would be .a pretty hard matter to get anything that will readily take these mud stains off the shell without injuring the shell or its contents. We see no reason why an\ considerable number of your egg-^ should be stained. You should pro vide good nesting places for your hens, filling them with good litter of some kind that will keep them off the ground. You might try dipping them in alcohol and then rubbing them with a clean cloth. If nice, roomy nest boxes are provided and put in rather dark or secluded places, you should have but little trouble in get ting all your hens to use them. Oi course, you must have a sufficient number of them, so that hens vvi.l not get tired of waiting for room jind be nhiigprUn take to the ground Ducks.
