Economy Constrains Southerners to Trade Here +•+ +•+ +•+ +•+ +•+ Dealers Aided By Close Relations With Makers The story of how the South fought the North and Bast and Middle West for recognition as an industrial and manufacturing section, and how it won the fight, is one of romance. The fight was conducted with At lanta as one of the strategic point*. Atlanta’s success was the South’s success. And here, In the official, un colored figures of the United States Census Bureau, is the etory of At* lanta’s success The bulletin of cen sus save: Atlanta, the first city of Georgia, had in 1909 a value of products 129.1 per cent in excess of the value re ported for 1899.” And In 1913 an official estimate places the value of manufactured products as nearly 100 per cent in ex cess of the value for 1909. Atlanta’s fight, the South’s tight, is worth back ing. The bulletin continues: “There Is a great diversity of manufacturing industries in Atlanta. The cotton-goods, fiour and grist mill, steam railroad repair *»hop, cor dial and ayrup. and fancy and paper box industries are important, each reporting products in 1909 exceeding $1,000,000 in value. There were many other industries in the city each of which had a value of products ex ceeding $100,000.” The South’s fight seems won At lanta’s fight for a foothold as a manufacturing center certainly is won, according to the figures In 3899 there were 198 manufacturing establishment* in the city. In 1904, 294; in 1909, 488; to-day, something like 660, in which almost every con ceivable article necessary to the trade of the South is turned out. In these figures, the appeal of Atlanta to Southern merchants i* made. The appeal probably need not be repeated with too much force, because the Southern trade already has heard it. Of 312,491 merchants within the scope of Atlanta’s legiti mate territory—600 miles—more than 200,000 trade in Atlanta. All this ie the consummation of the romantic story. The story it self tells of discouraging starts, grow- ing out of a necessity for a manu facturing center in the South. At lanta. with Its wonderful railroad facilities, seemed the logical center, mid the humble beginnings were 1 made here "Humble only at first. Atlanta made good, began to fill the South’s wants. Now it has the 660 manufac turing plants, where everything from railroad spikes to silk kimonos, au tomobiles and face powder, wagons and law books, everything, is manu factured. Of 262 distinct lines of manufacture known to the world. 283 are followed in Atlanta. The South ne< d go no further for its purchases. Atlanta, going in for manufactur ing. went in with an energy, and on a scale worth while. No waste was occasioned by establishments too small. To quote the census bureau again: "The great bulk of the manufac turing was carried on in establish ments having a product valued at not lees than $100,000 ” Atlanta is ready to handle any de mand. The Industries of Atlanta listed in the census bulletin as the most productive, are: artificial stone, bread and bakery products, carriages wagons, and materials, men s cloth ing, including shirts, confectionery, copper, tin, and sheet iron products, 1 foundry- and machine shop products, furniture and refrigerators, leather goods, lumber and timber products, marble and stone work, mattresses and spring bpds, paint and varnish, patent medicine and compounds and druggists’ preparation*, printing and publishing. But these are Just a start. A par tial list of articles bearing the stamp "Made in Atlanta" is amazing One such list was compiled by the Cham ber of Commerce in 1909 (since w hich time the number of plant* has grown one half again In size) and bears the following articles: A Partis! Atlanta is the foremost distribut ing point of the South, for products manufactured In other sections. Its position here is made possible by the unique railroad advantages. Four teen lines, radiating from the city as spokes from the hub of a wheel, penetrate every section of the South. The valleys, longitudinal with the Allegheny Mountains, plunge toward Atlanta, and offer a natural road way. As if by fate, railroads lead to Atlanta naturally. The heavens con spired, it would sepm, toward At lanta's greatness as a railroad and shipping center. And man has helped with advantageous freight rates. The low freight rate on coal and Iron, little more tran {1 a ton on each commodity, gives Atlanta a tremend ous advantage over other cities as a manufacturing center. The raw prod ucts are at hand. Atlanta's blessings are the South's. The city is the South's pride, an<^ the Southern merchant’s best friend. Ho need go no further. Why trade in Atlanta? Hardheaded business men of the South have a right to the question. All things else being equal, why trade In Atlanta rather than any where else?
