•Feeding Chickens \f
For Egg Production
Should Begin When the Chir.k
Hatched—Lay Founda
tion Early.
Feeding for egg product:
be commenced when the
hatched, and there should
skip or a jump from etart
In other words, to lay th
for early and contlnuou
ichlcken must be well not
rhed until
th^ time it is ha
maturity.
-Tine of the common complaints in
rthe fall is that the pullet* do not com-
>menoe to lay as early as they should.
The reason is they are not ready to
‘lay; they are not fully developed.
‘They have not had sufficient nourish
ment. and therefore run a month or
'two over the usual laying period.
A constant and varied supply <>f
good, wholesome foods is the remedy
that should be applied, and we know
of no better way to accomplish th"
end sought than by the hopper feed
ing process. Where the pullet -as a
.chick has been hopper fed with good
mixed grains and beefscrap. where a
large flock is maintained and the sup
ply of insects is not sufficient to give
the animal matter needed, the chances
ire that it will begin to lay early and
keep It up through the winter.
When the feeding is done at inter
vals it is a difficult matter to feed
ling out; an inch »n
torn of the hopper to allov
onie out into the tray part
* picked out by the Chick*
*r should be kept under »
some sort to keep the fee

quence the chick does not make the
best possible growth.
To make good winter layers, do not
yard or confine the pullets too early,
but allow them to range as long as
possible. They will then settle down
to steady egg production when they
are cooped and will continue through
the winter. A convenient size for .‘*0
growing chicks would be 12 by 20

Question* and Answers.
Judge Marshall; fan you tell me of
some way to get soli stain from the,
shells of White eggs? I keep a fine
lot of White Leghorns, laying pure
white eggs, but the red soil here
stains I hern so it can not be washed
off so It will not show when sent to
market. If you can be of any help to
me. I shall ccrtainlv be thankful for
the sc rvlce. R. C. B.
Rome. Ga.
ANSWER 11 would he a pretty
hard matter to get anything that will
readily take these mud stains off the
shell without injuring the shell or it.-*
contents. We see no reason why any
considerable number of your eggs
should be stained. You should pro
vide good nesting places for your
hens, filling them with good litter «>f
some kind that will keep them off the
ground. You might try dipping them
In alcohol and then rubbing them
with a clean doth. If nice. room,
nest boxes are provided and put. In
rather dark or secluded places, you
should have but little trouble in get
ting all your hens to use them. Of
course, you must have a suffleien
number of them, so that hens wi'l
not get tired of waiting for room and
be obliged to take to the ground.
