A great many serious mistakes are
being made by beginners in the poul
try buainea* from ignorance. True,
experience is a very good arid safe
teacher, but often very expensive in
both time and money.
It is for this reason we desire io
point out the safe road as well as the
one to be avoided.
An idea prevalent with beginners in
starting with thoroughbred stock ;s
that all that I* necessary is that stock
he pure, so-called. In other words
they purchase stock of a neighbor who
says hit stock is pure, but when an
expert breeder or judge looks at this
j stock he finds that it Is anything hut
what high-class standard bred stock
should be.
But you ask, If it is pure what can
! be the matter with it? A great many
I things can be the matter with it. Tn.
I most commoii * i.qrf d f breeding where

classes of We . :"ced run in the bleed
ing pen.
For example, take the Barred Rock
which i» quite familiar, in a certain
way. to almost everyone. Upon the
premises of this careless breeder w«*
find hens of forty different shapes and
shades of color, from light to almost
solid black. These are running pro
miscuously with a half dozen roosters,
all different in color and type of
make-up. If you stop to think for a
moment, can t you imagine what such
a combination would produce, or as
the Dutchman said, "w'hat it would
not produce?” We can not hope fo
anything in the shape of uniformity
of the young stock we raise when all
sizes, shapes and colors were allowed
to run together and form the breeding
stock.
Culls Bound to Corns.
That the best and selected stock
will breed some culls no experienced
breeder of any breed will deny. They
are bound to come. That the tendency

is downward instead of upward, if
no culling is done, will also oe readilv
admitted by the experienced. Conse
quently. if we expect to improve .»r
even maintain s high standard of ex
cellence, we must breed from only the
choicest specimens, putting ihoae of
uniform color and breeding types into
the same pens. This plan, and th s
alone, will prove satisfactory.
Eggs at *2 and $3 seem unreason
able and to'* high to the average farm
er or villager who has made no study
of the conditions, and the tempt i-
tion to buy the cheapest eggs he can
gel \y generally more than lie tan
stand. If h.- be at ail progressive in
his make-up. and has any idea <*f
eventually getting the best. th'
change w ill come sooner o r later when
this (heap slock will be disposed of
and a fresh start made. Hut this is
expensive in both Ime and money
wasted. True, a man might take
quite a low-grade of stock and with
years of patient culling and breeding
get to where it would make a pretty
good showing. But my, what a long
and tedious road to travel!
Now. friends, you who are starting
or getting ready to invest in pure bred
stock and hive an eye to tlie beautiful
and the best, take my advice and open
your purse wide enough to get some
thing good, if you do not get just
what you thought you would, try it
again and keep on until you succeed
