About two weeks before weaning time, put the old hen and her brood in a good roomy brood coop, large enough to accommodate the young sters until cold weather without crowding. It is so easy to make the change while the hens are with their chlckq and so difficult after they are weaned. If you are trying to false a lot of young chicks and your time l* lim ited so that you are inclined to throw your youngsters a lot of feed at most any time, having no fixed time or regular amount of feed, better adopt the hopper plan. Keep the hopper full of good mixed grain and another with good beef scraps and a third with grif and oyster shell. A large self-feeding water fountain to he filled once a day. Those conve niences, with a good clean roosting coop, and chicks will do better and grow faster than they will as cared for by many hurried people. • The poultry house either for young chicks or grown fowls, should he so arranged as to allow thorough airing and .sunshine. Nothing is so condu cive to health a« sunshine and fresh air, and nothing will cause m.ore trou blesome diseases than a dark and damp house with the air and sun shine kept out. Stick a pin here and prevent wholesale trouble. If Is a good plan to protect your young and growing broods from rat? and vermin of all kinds by the dex terous use of a little one-incti mesh poultry wire. It is a much more eco nomical way than to wait until you have one or two broods all broken up by these night raiders, and then go to work to prevent It Better make the first move yourself than to wait for the rats. Look out for lice and mites these warm days. Do not let them get the upper hand of you. Keep the house clean, especially tin roost poles, and at the points at which they rest upon the support. These are the breeding places. A quart-sized oil can with a small spout, filled with kerosene, can he used to drown them out effec tually, running it right along over the roost pole, so that it becomes thor-* oughly saturated. To rid the fowls of what they have upon their bodies, use n good ready-prepared lice pow der of some reliable make and dust the feathers thoroughly of each spec- 1 limn. Night is a good time to at tend to this part of the business. Judge Marshall: Gan you tell me where I can buy some Rose Comb Barred Plymouth Rocks' I have been raising them for a number of years, and now I want to get some new blood. J may buy either the eggs or some cockerels to mate with what I have on hand. I have never seen them advertised anywhere, but thought you would know all about them. I will certainly appreciate some In formation about them. Seneca, S. C. R. B. JACKSON. Answer.—-There is no such breed as the Rose Comb Barred Rock. You are either breeding the old American Dominique, which is colored almost the same as the Barred Rock, but has a rose comb, or you have Wyandotte blood mixed in with Plymouth Rock, and by selecting the Rock color with the rose comb you have what you thought was a Rose Comb Rock. The American Dominique is a much older breed than the Plymouth Rock, but has never been very popu lar or extensively bred. It is a good one. nevertheless. It. is, however, about two pounds lighter in weight than the Hock and for that reason has r.ot taken the .place as a general pur pose fowl. If you are really anxious to have a rose comb barred fowl, we would advise you to get the pure Dominique and breed it in its purity, unless that is what you have already.
