Mom of the pons have settled down to business and are producing eggs in quite regular numbers. The hens have averaged 16 eggs more up to May 1 than those last year did. A Buff Wyandotte hen from Mis souri holds the record for the month, laying an egg each day. A Buff Wyandotte pen laid 240 eggs during the month, or an average of 24 eggs per hen. which Is mighty good for ten hens. Twenty-four pens laid over 200 eggs to the pen for the month. Out of the 700 hens, over half of them laid more than two eggs each for the 30 day* in the month, which is certainly good work. This, too, Is spite of the fact that 195 hens had to be broken from wanting to set. What seems to be sticking in the crop of the American poultry man the hardest at this time is the record that the pen of English White Leghorns is piling up month after month. They were shipped over 4,000 miles and ar rived sore, hungry and tired, but to work they went within three or four days and have been hitting it up with a record clip ever since. No pen has ever come near passing them. And it looks now like they might hold the record to the end of the year, for the time* is about past for heavy laving, when the average hen might hope to Jump in and with a running start snatch the record away from them. It will soon be the moulting season, when these incessant English layers stand fully as good a chance as any of keeping up the good work more or less through the hot w'eather. Why English Hen* Lead. The question is being asked by al most every' poultry enthusiast, Why Is It that these English hens are able to lead? Various excuses are framed to shield the records of our own hens in this great work. Some have said that these hens were hatched at just the right time to do their best work in this campaign. Well, granting that one would that some one on this side of the water might have a pen In the same con dition—Just right for the fray and equal if not exceed them. Others assert that it Is a matter of stamina, and that they are strong enough to stand the trying ordeal of continuous egg production, while our more delicately bred birds are not. We are of the opinion that our Eng lish brethren have been putting in good licks at the very important util ity side of the game, while we have been running a little bit more to the very fancy part of It. We believe that they have in this endeavor for great egg-production not only select ed the heavy layers for their breed ers, but they have at* the same time selected the strong and robust of this class, even to those that we would calj a little coarse In judging last winter at the great Baltimore show we noticed a lot of imported White Leghorns, and they seemed to be rather large and angular 2\ d» <9> (0) EDITED B\ JUDGE F J MARSHALL I I ((J) dD <0> In their make-up, and very active in disposition. Their owner told me they were almost Incessant layer*. They were not pretty, like our own type of Leghorns. There is one thing sure, and that Is that these hens, ten in number, have laid 1,117 eggs during the first five and a half months, while their nearest competitors laid 948 eggs. The best English hen has laid 141 eggs in 165 days. It stands our American bleed ers to do a little investigating along these lines to ascertain if possible wherein the secret lies, and make some decided advances along that route. Feeding Method*. Now as to the feeding methods, we want to say that among the penH which are being devoted to feeding experiments that the one that has had all kinds of grain constantly be fore them that they might eat at will Is still in the lead. The Canadian method has been the next most suc cessful mode of feeding, while what Is termed “egg farm” methods, as given and used by one of the great Eastern egg farms, has been the least success ful In results. We herewith append what Is called the Saylor method: Dry Mash—Fifteen pounds ground alfalfa meal, 15 pounds corn meal. 15 pounds ground wheat, 15 pounds glu ten meal, 15 pounds ground oats, 10 pounds ground oil meal or high-grade beef scraps, 15 pounds wheat bran, one 25-cent box of Saylor’s poultry powder. The above mash is fed in hoppers. Three times a week the mash is slightly moistened and fed in a crum bly form, to which is added one-fourth teaspoonful of the powder. After the third week the moist mast is reduced to once a week. To give the fowls the proper amount of exercise, we feed the following whole grains In the litter per hen. one-half ounce each of coarse cracked corn, whole wheat and hulled oats, also sprouted oats. Every other day we substitute one-half ounce of fresh cut green bone. For their night feed the hens are also supplied with green food, such as cab bage, beets, etc. There is one thing that we are learning from these lay ing reports, that breeding for eggs will be looked after more and more as the years go by, and we do not want to see an English pen able to take away the prize very many years.
