Much of the success with the duck lings depends upon (he feeding and care of the ducks that lay the eggs to produce the little ones. They should be well and judiciously fed. They must have a good supply of green food all the time, as well as a supply of beef scraps, together with the grain feed and grain mash, if the feeding is not up to this stand ard you will find that 4here is a low fertility and the eggs will be slow at hatching at that. If you are establishing a strain of good stock, it stands you in hand to set nothing but pure white eggs at any time. Unless you have had quite a little incubator experience with hen eggs and have been pretty successful, better use the hens for hatching. Use good, roomy boxes to hold the nest, setting it upon the ground, fill ing in with about two inches of dirt, upon ibis put your chaff or nesting material, rounding it out nicely. Of course, they will need the usual good care that all setters need. And, if away from the rest of the flock, so much the better. Duck eggs are in tended to be Incubated in or near the water, and the shell Is thick and very dense for that reason. Taking it from that standpoint it is but reasonable that they should have a lot of sup plied moisture. Setting them upon the ground will have a tendency to help matters some, but not enough to Insure a first-class hatch. They should be sprinkled with good warm water once the latter part of the first week, and at least every other day the last week, or still better, every day. Have the water good and warm, but not hot. Do your sprinkling Just when you are ready to shut up the machine, after having turned and aired them if they are in an incu bator. With the hen you can sprinkle and set the hen right baek on and let her come off for feeding as she chooses. Do not feed them until they are 24 hours old. but water without fail. Have your fountain so that they can drink without getting into the water and wetting themselves, for this will be almost as fatal as a dose of poison. Drinking Water. The water should be at least an inch deep where they drink so they can wash their bills and nostrils to 9 # <G> LDI1LD B\ JUDGE F. J. Main 2690-L. 5-15-17 keep themselves clean, otherwise they will be sore around the eyes. Of course, there are a number of good ways to feed that will bring success, but we have observed that the following Is about as simple and good as any we Rave tried; Feed regularly four or five times a day of good rolled oats or dry bread toasted and then soaked in lukewarm water or sweet milk, squeezing out the sur plus liquid so it will not be sloppy. With this mix a teaspoon of sharp sand to each handful of the bread. Of course, the rolled oats or bread are too expensive to continue for feed, so it is a good plan to gradually change off to the following good formula: Three parts good wheat bran, one of shorts, one part of corn meal and one-half part of fine beef scrap, one part of alfalfa or clover meal and one-fourth part of sharp sand. This should be moistened with warm water just enough to make It stick together and still be crumbly in the hand. One feed during the day should be of small chick feed of the grain kind. At night is as good a time to give it as any, for it is a little more substantial and will stay with them longer during the night. Always feed just about what they will eat up clean in .about ten minutes and still not be too hungry. One can soon learn to gauge the amount about right. See to it that the ducklings have good, clean bedding at all times, as they soil it much quicker than do chicks, and a damp roosting place will kill them off faster than you can hatch them. After they get well feathered out it takes a good deal of feed to satisfy them, and we should not be stingy with them if we expect good growth and early layers. <JI‘B8TION—If you have read this, is it , not reasonable to suppose others will Bead your ad in this paper if you want anything? ^LIABLE, competent anti experienced ^tusiness man wishes connection with ! mercantile or manufacturing house <*.» i wihle in any line of work.
