Experience is One of the best old teachers we have. The mistakes we made last year should be stepping- stones to better ones this year. When ever you get into a bole and are able to get out again, fill the hole up be fore you leave it. to be sure that there will not be a repetition of the disaster. * Do not sell off your best stock at any price, unless you are sure you can buy something better at a fair price. This thing of selling off all the best eggs and stock will soon de plete any breeder’s stock in trade. Ana that is just what many breeders are doing—just because they have the demand and can not resist the temp tation to sell. Hens that have access to the wood ash pile will pick out the small hits 2*? h “ rcoa| . eagerly hunting for them. This Is a gentle hint that where they do not have access to it, it should be supplied. Charcoal is one of the be^t thin## to ward off indigestion that can be used. Douglas* mixture is a strong iron tonic mixture supposed to be valuable for hens which have been laying heavily all spring and seem to be somewhat prostrated during the late springtime. It is made by adding one- half pound of copperas to one gallon of soft water; when dissolved, add one-half ounce of sulphuric acid. The ^mixture should be kept in a stone or glees vessel. Use a tablespoonful to the drinking water for a dozen hens. In the matter of small things, do not try to follow too closely the meth ods of others. You can profit by the experience of others,*but you can im prove upon the details as you o along. In procuring strong, fertile eggs for hatching, less forcing feeds should be used than when you are striving ld produce all the market eggs possible and are not particular about the fer tility. Milk is excellent for laying hens. Feed green cut bone sparingly to breeding hens. A constant supply of fresh green stuff is essential. The foundation factors in the poul try business are: First, love of the work; second, a determination to suc ceed; third, attention to details, leav ing nothing undone. It can be used while the second is being sowed to green stuff. Small Eggs. Judge Marshall: I have a small lot of Plymouth Rock hens, raised in 1912. 1 have them now in a pen. They have laid a good many eggs, but the eggs are very small. I consider the eggs too small to set. The hens are healthy and largo and hearty. What is the cause of the eggs being so small? Very truly, A. J. E. SMITH. Madison, Ga.. May 8. 1913. ANSWER—There are several rea sons w hy your hens may lay the email eggs. They may be from a class of hens which have been producing small eggs naturally, or they may be from stock that has been inbred for years. Some people think nothing of keeping the roosters they raise each year with the old hens and the pullets raised that year, which is the very worst kind of inbreeding and has a bad effect upon the stock raised from them. They are weak in constitution and lay small, insignificant looking eggs. Then, again, there is such a thing as getting your hens too fat— that is, all filled up with fat inside— which very frequently, but not al ways, causes the hen to lay sma’l eggs. Hatching chickens during the late summer or fall, when they do not fully mature before cold weather, very oft en causes them to produce small eggs during the first period of their laying. The matter of feed has something to do with the size of eggs. Hens that are fed too long upon restricted ra tions, w ith but little variety and little or no green stuff, beefscrap and such things, do not develop their eggs as they should. Not knowing the conditions con nected with your hens, I throw ont these suggestions for you to gather your own conclusions. Eggs—All Varieties. Property owners along Ivy Street, where regrading is in progress, have begun to meet the new conditions. Gude & Co. applied Monday morning at the Building Inspector’s office for a permit to underpin the Wellington Apartments, at the corner of Ivy and Houston Streets, so that this struc ture can be adjusted to the new level. Decatur Land Boom. Faith in Deaatur land has of late found considerable expression in a sweeping publicity campaign carried on by Atlanta real estate agents. Among local advertisers who have extensive interests in the DeKalb suburb are Edwin P. Ansley, who is developing Winona I’ark ; L. I*. Sot- tenfield, who has a subdivision of 235 lots in Claremont Park; the E. Rivers Realty Company, who are offering fourteen lots; Charlton Barrett, de veloper of Decatur Heights; Foster & Robson, agents for the Wash Hous ton property; William S. Ansley and Cliff W.
