It la thia rush in feeding that (rauaea a great deal of indigna tion and mortality in little chickens. Let them work on some good sharp coarse sand for twenty-four hours. In this way you will have removed the tendency to ga* in the crop, a common ailment where feed is given too soon. You will get a sour crop, bloating, indigestion, resulting in diarrhea, and death Is the result. When you do feed let it be fed dry. Do not tamper with the regulator after you have had the machine open and the eggs cooled down. You can tell nothing about it then. If the regulator needs any adjustment, at tend to it at a time when it haa been running for hours without open ing. When you get ao you can care for and make profitable 25 hens, then you are ready to increase the num ber if you desire, but until you can do that much better not go any far ther. If some of the hens have been roupy during the past winter and re covered, better be cautious about breeding from them. That Is where so much of the trouble comes from, as fowls which have had a severe case of roup are almost sure to pro duce chicks which are inclined to be roupy the following fall and winter. Breed only from those strictly sound and healthy. Laying hens are often confined to a fattening diet for months at a time through the laying season with out any thought about the results. They will lay and perhaps lay well for a time, but will eventually .get out of condition with indigestion and liver trouble. They need a variety with lots of green atqff for filler. Diarrhea in chicks is often caused by sour feed, impure water, damp quarters, filthy coops, exposure to cold and wet, lack of sharp grit and several all-round cross-grained, wrong methods of treatment. Look out for these conditions and right them if they exist at yours place. Questions and Answers. Judge F. J. Ga. 8 28-15 to know where and by whom the National Egg Laying Contest is car ried on? 1 have seen quite a little about it, but I am ignorant as to what it represents. Any information along this line will be appreciated. M. R. S., Madison, Ga. ANSWER: The National Egg Laying Contest, so called, is being carried on by the State of Missouri at Mountain l we, by Mr. T. ] Quisenberry, a poultryman of nation wide notoriety, one who has had experience not only in utility fowls, but who knows a thoroughbred from head to tail, and what it should be. The first annual contest closed the first of November last and the second year’s contest was started November 15, so that the first half of the year is almost up. This great old State of Missouri, so commonly slurred in various ways, produces more poultry and poultry products than any other State in the Union. The income last year from these poultry products amounted to more than $46,000,000, as given out by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. A few years ago the poultry breeders of the State were delighted with the appropriation of $22,000 by the Leg islature for the promotion of more and better poultry. That was mighty good, but this year's solons have just raised to $66,000. What do you think of that? They are. certainly satisfied with the way the money has been used and want to get more of the same kind of results. It looks to us that if some of the other States which have a tendency to poke fun at Missouri would even follow along behind in her steps they would be doing mighty well.
