Pine Castle, Fla. 32-19-6 THOR MOTORCYCLES, repairs and ac cessories; best equipped repair shop In city We will take care of you. South- Motorcycle Co., 116 Edgewood Ave 3-26-31 The value of the poultry products in the country for 1910 was approxi mately $800,000,000, and the 1913 product will be around $1,000,000,000. Much of this is attributed to the everlasting and persistent efforts of the American Poultry Association, an organization whose aims and efforts are to the building up and increas ing of the thoroughbred poultry In terests of this country. How well they have succeeded we will leave the reader to judge for himself from the wonderful building up of the industry in every nook and corner of the country. But the very people who should receive the greatest benefits from this work are not reaping the benefits they should. I refer to the farmers of this country, and especially those of the South. The raising of cotton by the means of chemical fertilizers seems to have a death grip upon them; so much so that they can not see over it into any thing more profitable to them. They have been constantly ruining their land, but they have been turning it out to grow up in bushes and adding new land to keep up the supply. But that string to their bow Is about worn out, and they must look to the build ing up or maintaining the fertility of the soil now in hand. Chemical Fertilizers. This can hardly be accomplished by the use of chemical fertilizers, for at best they represent little more than prods and stimulants, such as whisky, morphine and the like to the human body, requiring more and more at each succeeding dose to produce the results, the result of which is utter depletion. What they need are the natural elements, such as poultry ma nure. prepared in the way of a com post heap, can furnish to the soil. A thousand hens on the average small farm, with proper care of the drop pings, will do wonders in enriching the soil. The fand should then be cropped in rotation with peas, corn, clover, potatoes, etc.—with the care ful deep plowing so essential to the conserving of all the elements of the soil and air, which will work wonders. If the hens are allowed to range at intervals during the day, they will do more toward destroying the insect enemies of the crops than all the in secticides you can buy. About 175 days represent the work ing actually spent during the year upon the farm. If the farmer would devote at least a part of the remain ing time to the care and management of a good flock of well bred chickens BUSINESS GUIDE Ready Reference for the Business Man, the Artisan And the Public in General Auction Sales of Furniture and Household Goods. The American Poultry Association stands for pure thoroughbred stock. It does not indicate to you what va rieties you should keep. It leaves that to you. But whatever you do, discard the old mixed breed, and take up something that will show uniformity not only in color and breed character istics, but in the production of eggs and meat. I have simply outlined a course that can be made profitable not only in the way of dollars and cents, but the improvement of your land in a permanent way. Get busy and work out the details, as every one must who makes a success of any thing in this world. Bicycles. ^.1 ^OlfTsftitCLES and supplies. See D. Alexander, 64 N. Pryor. M. 3116. They sit around on their hock joints a good deal of the time, and when they do attempt to get about they succeed with difficulty, hobbling about in a most ungainly manner. They seem to eat well and in many ways are all right. We have lost none so far with it. but of course will If they are not helped in some way Can you suggest anything that might help them out? Thanking you in advance. I am yours truly—Mrs. M. M. H., Jackson. Miss. Answer.—The first thing to do is to remove the cause if possible. It is no doubt rheumatism caused by roosting too low in a house or coop with a damp clay floor. Give the floor a coating of two inches of good dry sand or sawdust; something that wiil remove the results of the dampness. Have plenty of ventilation, but let it be pure and free from filth or damp ness. Those affHeted should respond readily to treatment of some good lin iment or a solution of witch hazel and arnica well rubbed in about the joints. We would also recommend the use of salts in the drinking water at the rate of a teaspoon to each two fowls. Give this one week and then use Douglass Mixture the next week. The principal effort should, how ever. be made in protecting the well ones rather than in treating the sick. Ducks. SELLING OUT at a great sacrifice.
