Tolman, 820 Austell building Have Leghorns Been Bred to Fine Point? Are They Too Small for the Best Value?—Question Worth Considering. Have we not bred our Leghorns down to too fine a point to be of the greatest value as egg producers? In other words, are they not too small for the best value? When I was a boy of 15 I bred first the White and then the Brown Leg horns. At that time both of the:*e varieties were of quite a different type from the standard Leghorn of the present day. They were a good deal larger In frame, longer in body, of a coarser make-up. Their combs were much heavier and had longei serra tions or points As well as 1 can re member, they laid a larger egg than they do to-day. In carriage, they were lower In front, with body carried more horizontal than the average specimen of to-day. Taken all around, they were of decidedly bet ter egg type. In my way of looking at it. That a great many strains or fam ilies of the Leghorns have been so long to secure the very finest and neatest of combs and the trimmest of iails. and light, fancy shanks sup porting a neat little body, no ob serving pouitryman can deny. I believe also that the average breeder. If he has given the matter a second thought, can see that the pres ent-day Leghorn has not the real stamina and vitality that he should have if he is expected to carry the banner for egg production at the head of tlq- column and not be trampled under foot by hla more vigorous ri vals. Consider Size. Perhaps many of us do not stop »o J consider the question of size, unless | our attention is called to It by some one who has been making compari son*. We have lately seen a number of fowls of this class from the Old Country a lot from Denmark and some from England. They were all larger than our American birds This fact alone set us to thinking and won dering if we were not allowing our strains to be too finely bred in the mad rush for prize-winning stock. It may be all right for the fellow who makes his living selling stock and eggs for exhibition purposes. But should we not as producers of com mercial eggs look after the utility part of the work? We learned from those who were breeding the Danish stock, and had been experimenting with them for years, that they found them really better layers of larger eggs and they were of a decidedly more robust constitution. For this they were less able to break down after a season of heavy laying, as many of the finely bred American Leghorns do. Those who have been working with these Danish fowls have been using them both in their purity and crossing them with home-bred stock. They say they have found them very sat isfactory when used in both ways As one of these breeders expresses himself, one can make Bantams out of Brahmas with a few 1 seasons of selecting, starving and breeding at the proper season, etc. Commercial Business. But we are not after that kind of stock for the commercial egg busi ness. You who have been following the reports of the present national egg-laying contest are aware how the pen of English Leghorns are holdinc ROOM AND B0ARD l WANTED—Couple to board In private West End home; very desirable loca tion. This fact alone should be enough to make our Leghorn breeders- sit up and take nojice. It looks to us very much like, if this fine type of Leghorn Ir continued, we will have to have two classes— one called the exhibition type, good only for that purpose, and another for utility, bred to serve its best possible purpose for that. But such a course would not be w ise. The fancy should not only rater to the show-room foibles, but look after the real »r substantial side of it as well. If this were done, the trade in fine stock would certainly be increased, if all understood it that way. Let there be a meeting upon common ground. For a time, at least, the standard should be so adjusted or modified that a rather large comb, legs stout in bone, body of good length, broad and deep, would be the correct type. In fact, describe a fowl with a little more stamina in its make-up. We w-ould, however, keep it entirely distinct from the Minorca in every line of its make up. This can easily be done and still get fait- size Definite Size Standard. Another thing that should be looked after in considering this matter of size, is that of fixing upon something definite. Who can tell you what the size «>f a 'Leghorn should be? When the novice asks the question -as to size or weight, what are we to tell him'.’ Tell him that it is about midway between a Cochin Bantam and a Brahma? If he is sufficiently versed in weigh;9 to know what these weigh, he may be able to figure it out. but what non senses— why not fix standard weights for the Leghorn and be done with it? This has been my plan for years, but someone says when you put weight to them you put them in the Minorca class. Not a bit of it! The Minorca weights are 6 1-2. 7 1-2, 7 1-2 and 9. for pullet, hen, cockerel and cock, re spectively. For the Leghorn class we would suggest weights as follows' Pullet. 4; hen. 5; cockerel. 6. and cock, 7 pounds. You will notice that there is quite a different between these and the Minorca weights, yet it will give them a standing. We will know where to find them and what to ted people who want to know what their size is. It will place them in a better position in the show room when .1 comes to deciding special and sweep stake prizes. They will not be handi capped as they now are in thes* cases. Let us do a little planning to get the best there >s for the utility man. and at the same time not hurt the thoroughbred stock trade. The more in harmony w e get these two branches of the trade working, the belter for both of them.
