4 Paris Men of Fashion Are Forced to Jump From One Pair of Trousers to Another. Financier Warns of Credit Strain Resulting From Lavish Ex penditure of Money. here's the CARVINCJ r- KNire J DETROIT. May 27 Joavph T. Tal bert. vice president of the National City Bank, of New York, in an ad dress delivered before the Bankers’ Club here, declared everything has been dear eaoept credit, and. as a fresuR, “our expand**;! loans and de- boftit* constitute the weak spots in Sur domestic and business situation. Mr. Talbert gave statistics showing jjie gross loans and investments ttf all the banks In the United States Btnoe 1907 has been somewhere in the neighborhood of $5,000,000,000, while tn»> total Increase In the gold stock Of the United States since 1907 aggre gated $506,000,000. This condition." said Mr Talbert, “although perhaps not so strong as U should be to justify and properly Sustain our increased loans, still is assuring and shows that there is no gubst&nti&l ground for alarm." Delight to Squander. Mr. Talhert caused quite a stir when he said that “evidence tend# to show that individually and collectively we are a nation of spendthrift*. “It is our habit and delight to squander, and no amount of preach ing will have any effect upon our prodigality as a national trait.” Mr. Talbert. in leading up to an ox planation of the drain on New York's K id supply by Europe, said the lend- z power of German banks had been 41 rained to the limit that Germany borrowed money here and sought to draw gold from us. In calling attention to the persis tent hoarding of gold by the French, he said the French, not content with the mere hoarding of their own gold, at heavy losses of exchange, forced from us. either for their own account or for that of South America, upward of $56,000,000 of gold “The movement is going on and may continue, indefinitely. 'For lack of protection for our gold stock we have been obliged to sit helplessly and to submit to this forced exportation of gold, to our disadvan tage and discomfort This gold movement taking place at such a time and under such condi tions demonstrated the fact that often has been staled before ;hat New PARIS, May 27.—The dandies of Paris have daily been rehearsing of lale on quick-change dress In order to be able to slip from one suit Into another with lightning speed so as to waste the minimum of time in this way during the height of the season. The decrees of masculine fashion, which in recent rears have become as Inexorable as the requirements of feminine modes, arc unusually Dra conian this year. Even in the hottest weather It will not be permissible to appear In the streets wearing white flannels after 11 o’clock in the morn ing After lounging at his ease for an hour or so the well-dressed man must rush home and Jump Into a pair of neatly checked trousers. This gar ment which, as In the case of all the other trousers, the valet must iron out with sharply defined creases every morning, hangs broadest and loosest from the waist With this may go a tobacco-colored business coat with narrow lapels, and a silk hat For the Afternoon Call. This suit floes for a stroll in the Bols, hut after luncheon the dandy with (alls to pay makes a second quick change. This time he dons a pair of well-creased chimney-pot trousers with faint stripes, and a cut away coat, skin-tight. The latter must have a long tail, closely follow ing the shape of the figure and bulg ing nowhere. In the hottest weather the waist coat may he dispersed with on the sole condition that the coat be un buttoned and a white slip be worn sewed into the Inner side of the lapel to give the similitude of a waistcoat If one is going to the races white flannel trousers may be worn with this coat, but not if attending recep tions. Both mni-nlng and afternoon coats are built up so as to give the man the appearance of being deep-chested and broad-shouldered, do tailors are now- laving in a liberal supply of padding materl al. Snuff-Colored Eveninq Dress. The evening style runs in the direc tion of broad trousers. Again the striking leature, however, is the coat, which is a transparent imitation of the women’s "jupe fourreau.” The back and the tail, which fall below the knees, cling tightly to the body, and must fall In graceful curves not only behind \m\ also in front Black cloth is the evening wear, although colors are permitted this year, the choice mostly going to snuff-colored evening dress. Terra-cotta colored handkerchiefs are also a feature of men’s spring fashions. Paris tailors have entered a cam paign against London’s supremacy In the matter of men’s wear, and this year's fashions are designed with the object of persuading Americans to fit themselves out in Paris instead of in the British capital This Is a Good Time To Enter Timid boy and girl contestants are asking us, every day, if II is too late to enter this contest for free Shetland pony outfits Our answer is that now is the right time.
