Caponizing May Be
Made Profitable
Poultry Sideline!
Can Be Made an Additional 8ource of |
Income—Questions and
Answers.
Caponisiag may be made a profita
ble wide line upon every well regu
lated poultry plant of any size.
If well managed, it may be made
an additional source of Income, par
ticularly where there Is not a very
remunerative market for broiler*.
Upon many poultry plants the sur
plus cockerels are marketed as broil
ers that they ntay be gotten out of
the way before they have eaten their
heads off, as the saying goes. There
are locations, however, where it ia
not at all convenient to get them Into
a market that will pay good prices.
Where such conditions prevail, then
it la that the business of caponizing
comes in play* and can often be made
to turn the young male Into capons
that will grow r into money-makers. Of
course, one must have the proper kind
of stock or the operation will not be
a paying one. Take, for example, the
smaller laying breeds like the Leg
horns. It does not pay at all to try
to make a paying capon of them. The
increased weight will not he enough
to Justify It. And the quality of the
flesh will not be enough improved to
pay for the work. Where one breeds
any of the Rock or Wyandotte fam
ily, the Reds or .Orpingtons. It will he
all right, for they will all make good
ones, not only as to size, but In qual
ity at* well. A good heavy-boned
Plymouth Rock cockerel can often be
made to weigh from eight to ten
pounds at ten to twelve months of
age, and bring the top of the market
for capons, which is usually about
double that of the ordinary fowl upon
the market. This, of course, pays
well for the little extra trouble that
is Incurred for the operation and the
chances of loss. Of course, when it
comes to a real business for the best
there is In it the Light Brahma and
the Buff Cochin make the finest and
best capons. They are so tender in
fiber and the skin so loosely put on
that they will aJlow for almost any
kind of growth without becoming
hidebound, as will many of the
smaller breeds
The proper time for doing the work
of caponizing is between the ages ot
two and three months, at the time
when they will weigh about two
pounds. It should not be done when
they weigh less than this, and if one
waits much longer they get older and
the chances of loss are much greater.
It will not take any one of average
intelligence to get accustomed to the
mode of operation so that there will
not average a lose of more than one
or two in a hundred, which does not
amount to anything when compared
to the great gain In growth to be ob
tained after it is performed.
A good set of instruments and the
dexterity that comes from a little ex
perience Is all that Is essential to suc
cess. Although It may be done at

any time of the year, the most propi
tious time l« during the spring and
summer when everything Is at Its best
for good growth. There are no spe
cial things required, or extra hous
ing; Just good feed and plenty of It.
It is not possible as a rule to mar
ket them in the country towns, hut
at the finest hotels and reaort places,
where the price is not so Important as
the quality of the meat. We have
known a very good trade to be worked
up for them at the holiday season
by visiting private families in the
towns, telling them what you have
and the splendid quality they will get
from you. Then they make
mighty good eating for home con
sumption, so much better than at
tempting to eat the great overgrown,
strong-flavored cockerels late In the
fall and winter.
Questions and Answers.
Judge F. J. Marshall.—Is it advisa
ble to feed oats to hens a,s it comes
from the field; that Is, without be
ing clipped or ground? I have been
feeding it about twice a week for
some time, and my hens do not seem
to thrive very weil upon It. I would
like to have your valued opinion about
it. I shall thank you for the advice.
R. H. C., iAjcust Grove, Ga.
Answer.—It has been our experience
to feed a good deal of oats to chick
ens of all ages from three months on
up to grown fowls. When we did feed
It, it was fed regularly once a
day in moderate quantities and in
connection with other grains I be
lieve your trouble Is caused by your
being afraid to feed It every day.
Feeding as you have done but onco a
week the hens would fill up on it and
get more than they really needed.
When th.-v g*‘t it every day they will
only eat a small amount of it, then
It is easily digested. We should ad
vise you to feed It every day, at first
in very small amounts, gradually In
creasing the amount. Always with
some other grain, preferably cracked
com. Fed In this way, we see no real
reason why you should have any
trouble whatever, and it is a splendid
food to induce laying along with corn.
In fact, if one will take the trouble
to parch It a* coffee is browned in
the oven until the points are almost
burned, it will be the best laying food
you can contrive. Do not. however,
feed it to chicks under three months
of age
