K Rolf, Experiment, Ga. 5-31-5 Cause of Limberneck, Prevention and Cure Idea of Contagion Is All Wrong—Is the Result of Ptomaine Poison. Many people have the wrong idea of this trouble wUh chickens; they think it is a disease and is very con tagious. They form the opinion of its contagion from the fact that ho many become affected within a short time. This idea of contagion is all wrong. There is nothing in it; it is the result of poison. The fowls or chicks, as the case may be, get hold of some de cayed flesh of some kind which is filled with maggots, they eat this, worm? and all. The result! s ptomaine poison. You have no doubt observed that the trouble usually comes in warm weather when dead carcasses of any kind decomposes and is filled with these maggots. The cause is also much harder to locate in the summer time when the fowls perhaps upon the range and one of the number dies in the weeds or tall grass where it is not only not noticed, but is hard to find when searched for with all dili gence. Dead chickens are not the only things that will cause the trou ble. Any kind of decayed flesh will do it .sometimes, but a rat or cat thrown out unthinkingly will cause Just as much trouble. The trouble is not confined to any one section of the country, but will pop up anywhere when the conditions appear. How to Detect It. One need have but little doubt about detecting it, as the symptoms will very clearly indicate it. The fowl will stand around not noticing anything, with head on the ground between its feet. Once in a while it will affect one a. little different and cause it to throw its head back over its neck and back, seeming to writhe in agony. In fact, all of them will at times have fits of struggling a8 in the death struggle, but will get better again, and continue that way for some time. We do not believe it is so much the effect of the worms* themselves as it is the poison they contain or that adheres to them from the meat they have been work ing upon. There are many other kinds of worms that cause no ill ef fect at all. Be that as it may. these are the chaps that do the deadly work. As soon as fowls are found in this con dition begin work at once upon them. This is certainly one place where doctoring should be done, and that, too, in a hurry. If you have spirits of turpentine, give five drops in a tablespoon of sw’eet or cotton-seed oil. In case you do not have the turpen tine, use spirits of camphor, about a half teaspoonful to the oil. In case you have neither of these, give a lit tle of some good, strong liniment in dose about one-half of what a person would take. This should be followed toy doses of sweet milk. 1 say doses because they are, as a rule, too sick to want to take it of their own free will; so it is advisable to give it to them. One dose of these remedies w’ill usually make, them much better in an hour or two. In case it does not, repeat the dose in three hours. A Good Remedy. Another good remedy is to take lard, mustard, ginger and red pepper in equal parts, mix thoroughly and form into pills about the size of a navy bean, and give them two hours apart for three doses, which will jo the work if it is going to at all. Vaseline is really better than lard if you happen to have it on hand ready, aa no time should be lost in getting at the treatment, for it is the prompt ness that counts in such cases. If fowls have been on the range ind got the poison that way, it is better to put them in a yard where you can look after them and keep them from getting any more. Then give the premises a vigorous search and cleaning up to locate and remove the trouble. It is certainly worth the effort. It may be necessary to cut all the high weeds and grass about the poultry range that you may be sure you have gotten all the places of trouble. Do not be afraid to gather all of the chickens together, remembering that it * is not contagious. As the fowls begin to recover, give simple, easily digested food, such as bread and milk, cooked rice, etc. Ten drops of nux vomica to a quart of drinking water is a good thing to use for all the flock after the first part of the trouble is over. This limber-neck business is an old trouble, talked about many, many times, hut it is so common at this reason of the year that it is wisdom to be on the look out and ready for it. and know what to do for it.
