Judge Marshall; I would like to know something about the Single Comb White Leghorns. This Is my first year at breeding them, and I do not know much about them. This is one of our oldest standard breeds and Is strictly thoroughbred. This variety will, perhaps, come nearer breeding true to breed char acteristics than anything In our standard. They are characterized by their rather small size and sprlgh til ness, yellow legs and skin and rather large combs (standing erect on males and lopped to one side on the females), with pur« white plumage. Their bodies are rather long, tails good length and well spread; legs rather long and straight, causing the specimen to have an erect appearance. If a Leghorn has not an active, sprightly appear ance, it lacks the very characteristic features of the breed. The comb on the male should stand straight and erect, free from folds and wrinkles In front, and as smooth in general finish as possible, with five or six well-de fined points (five preferred). The earlobes should be white and smooth, fitting close to the head (rather ob long In shape); wattles, smooth and free from, wrinkles and rather long and pendulous. The comb on the fe males should He over to one side and be free from extra folds and wrinkles, with five well-defined points. Much depends upon the family lines you breed from as to the character of your stock. Some breeders in a care less manner let their stock run to low shanks, bodies carried low like a duck, and In that manner soon lose the beauty characteristics of the breed. The trees provide shade for the chickens during the hot months, when It is so essential to the comfort and growth of the chicks. Then the hen and chicks will be at work constantly until every bug and worm Is gone. I have known plum and pear trees to bear where chick ens are kept under them; when chick ens are not kept under them they have failed entirely. There are sev eral reasons for this. The first and very essential is, of course, the rid dance of bugs and Insects of all kinds. Another and very important result, and one not generally considered in this connection, Is the enriching by the droppings. Trees thus treated will not only bear fruit when others will not, but will yield double the quantity and will be of very superior quality, free from blemishes and defects not only on the outside, but at the seed. Then we have the pleasure and satis faction of a beautiful poultry yard, studded with trees, to look upon rath er than the barren grounds as usually seen. There is no question or doubt about the problem that you need to consider. It will work, and work to your satisfaction, if you go about it in a businesslike matter. Plums and peaches are especially adapted to the poultry yard and its consideration. It is not advisable, however, to let the chickens roost in the trees, as the droppings on the limbs tend to scald the bark and make it peel off. Ducks.
