In Women's Summer Shoes Finest Hostelry in World When Built, It Gives Way to New Century’s Progress. The Rev. H. M. DuBose and Dr. W. W. Memminger Take Issue With Chicago Minister. NEW YORK, May 3h. The old An- tor House, which stands in the path of a proposed subway, was closed yesterday and it is practically certain its doors will never be opened as a hostelry again. In all probability the building will be torn down and a modern structure erected on its site, which Is one of the most valuable In the city. The property is owned Jointly by Vincent Astor and William Waldorf Astor, Vincent owning the southern half while the northern half belongs to his cousin The Astor House was built by the original John Jacob Astor, who had his little fur store around the corner on Vesey Street To build the hot€jl he secured the property from various owners whose homes occupied the site. Opened in 1836. The building was finished in 183G, and in May of that year the doors of the finest hotel In America at that time were throw'n open. It had cost $360,000 to build; an enormous sum for those days. Although there wasn't a room with a private bath in the house 1t was considered to be the last word in elegance and luxury. For 20 years after itv opening the hotel continued to be the headquar ters for notables who visited New York. Foreign nobleman who came tory of the city. here. prominent politicians and statesmen of our own country and the social elite all stopped at the Astor House. Daniel Webster was fre quently registered at the hotel. John C. t’aihoun, Silas Wright, Franklin Pierce, Martin Van Buren, James Buchanan, Zachary Taylor. William Q. Seward, Stephen A. Douglas, Lew is Cass, Jefferson Davis, Horatio Sey mour and Henrv Clay were all reg istered at the hotel at one time or another Lincoln a Guest There. President Lincoln stopped there on his first visit to New York. The monster meeting to arrange for the reception of Charles Dickens on the occasion of his visit to this country was held here. Many public dinners of note, chief among them the dinner in honor of the Prince de JoJnvllle, in 1841, were held In the dining room. General Fremont and his family lived there during the presidential cam paign of 1856, and Admirals Farra- gut and Porter were frequent guests after the war. At the beginning of this month when it became certain that the old hotel would have to be closed, the manager notified the employees that they had better seek other jobH. Many left the room in tears. Sev eral of the employees ha^ve been with the Artor House for 20 years or more. Invariably the waiters at the Astor House have been Irishmen. A few will lament the passing of the old landmark and soon it will be only a memory, but a memory which can never be separated from the his tory of the city. Atlanta ministers take Issue with Dr. Aimer Peqnewell, of Dak Park, a suburb of Chicago, who says; “If the church Insists that marriage is a rite that belongs to It, then the church should at once make that rite free to nil. The minister who does not need a fee should be ashamed to take it and A MINISTER SHOULD BE FORCED TO STAND AT A WED DING WITH HIS OPEN HAND BE HIND HIM." Is a marriage fee a form of graft ? Do you think marriage fees should be abolished? These questions are answered by two well-known Atlanta clergymen. A reasonable fee paid to the minis ter or magistrate secures to the groom a sense of self-respect and self-worth iness whloh he will otherwise not feel." said Rev. II. M. Du Bose, pastor of the First Methodist Church. Regards Fees as Offset. “A man who marries is supposed to have made soma special financial preparation or arrangement for his new move In life, and the fee can be but a very small part of his necessary outlay. “Ministers perhaps more than all other men are called upon by Indigent people and marriage fees are usually thought of by the clergy as balanc ing a small part of their expenditures for charity. “The marriage fees that come into my hands," *aid the Rev. Dr Du Bose "represent possibly less than one-fourth of my exceptional expen ditures for charity. “A marriage fee is no charity to the minister A man pays $2.50 for license and the executing of this license is Just as necessary as its is suance. Therefore the fee for execu tion is Just as legitimate ns the fee for the Issuance, because the minis ter acts as the agent of the law when he performs the marriage. “A minister who marries a couple whom he knows to be unfit mentally or physically is himself a degenerate. have the same contempt for such a minister as I have for any other man who violates the moral obligations of his office. Holds State Responsible. "The State should bo held respon sible for the fitness and health of the contracting parties In marriage The State has expert physicians, an expert health board and should pass upon all persons who are to be mar ried “Of course the contracting parties should one minister refuse to marry them, can go to some other minister. The wav to correct tho evil of im proper marriage is to refuse to li cense.” Regarding cases where the parties to l)e married are under age, the Rev. Mr. Du Bose said: “If a young man and a young girl should come to my residence late at night with a mar riage license and, even though I knew them both to be under age, I should regard It as a niece of high ethics to marry them at once.” No Fees Are Solicited. The Rev. W. W. Memminger rector of All Saints Episcopal Church says: “A fee given to the minister for per forming a marriage is accepted, how ever no fee is solicited, it is not an obligatory matter and altogether vol untary. “A man should not get married un til be can afford a marriage fee and afford to keep a wife. I never ask for a fee for it Is part of my duty as a minister. “A wealthy man should pay a min ister a big fee and the fee the groom pays to the minister should bo In proportion to hls income.. A man who cun afford to give a big wedding feast and stag dinner cun certainly afford to give the minister a wedding fee'.*' f Clogged Bowels a Menace to Health Bryan Unable to Come to Atlanta Secretary of State William J.
