LEN A. FLEMING 1416 Broadway, N. Y.
Only the learned professions dispute
this motto.
I I 7K have been widely informed that
\\ the surpassing wealth of the
United States has come from the
fact that we have a most bountiful soil,
and propitious climate.
The farm, the forest, the sea, the mine
have given to us of their boundless riches.
But the potential wealth of this country
was here in 1492, just as it is now.
j Adam Smith was not exactly right when
he said that all wealth comes from labor
applied to land. We insert one word, and
now say, all wealth comes from intelligent
labor applied to land.
Beside labor, we must have initiative,
originality, enterprise. Beyond these, we
must have transportation. Things must
be carried from where they are plentiful to
where they are needed; and before this
j transportation begins, we must have a de-
I mand, and an ability to buy on the part of
! the consumer. People must want a thing,
otherwise they will not pay for it. And
certainly they will not pay for it if they
haven’t money.
Then the next question is, what is the
one big thing in the evolution of wealth?
And I answer, it is honest, intelligent labor.
This country is the richest country the
world has ever seen, simply because we
have liberated intellect. Wc do business
on enthusiasm.
The next thing, what is the big factor
in joy? And 1 answer, human love. Fel
lowship is heaven, and lack of fellowship
is hell.
Farmers’ wives go insane because they
have to live with farmers—grouchy, quar
relsome, complaining, fretful farmers.
The telephone, good roads, the bicycle,
the automobile are banishing nostalgia
from the farm. Freedom to come and go—
these are the things that evolve originality
and germinate initiative.
In medieval times there was no produc
tion of wealth. People got a scant living,
if at all, and starvation and disease stalked
rampant. Three hundred years ago the
average span of life was scarcely twenty
years.
Today, in America, it is over forty-five
years.
In business, men realize that the only
safe, effective method of dealing is the truth-
fill one. We know the only sure road to
success is via the direct road of mutuality,
reciprocity, co-operation.
Self-interest and self-preservation, both
turn on rendering an honest service.
But while the business world had ac
cepted truth as a working maxim, two of
the learned professions have not yet adopted
it. They are not willing to burn their
bridges until they get a subway ready.
In the business world wc say there is no
substitute for truth.
These learned professions have a substi
tute. Simplicity and frankness are not to
be expected from either the doctors or the
lawyers.
A few lawyers have attached themselves
to business institutions, and these thrive
by keeping business men out of difficulties.
But nine-tenths of all lawyers thrive through
damage suits, receiverships, crime, vice,
bankruptcies, dissolutions, disease, disaster
and death.
Doctors thrive only as people get sick.
When we are well, we need no physician.
Fees come from people in trouble.
Consequently, self-interest on the part
of the physicians and the lawyers prompt
them to perpetuate the woes of mankind.
No man is going to destroy his own busi
ness.
