A wavo of mercurial poisoning, de clared by psychologists to be the re sult of the publicity given to the case of B. Sanders Walker, the Macon, Ga., banker who died after swallowing bichloride of mercury tablets, seems to be sweeping the country. More than 20 cases have been re ported since Mr. Walker's death, and each day adds to the list. The num ber of suicides from the ordinary methods of carbolic acid and shoot ing has fallen off to a noticeable ex tent since the fact that bichloride of mercury Is deadly poison became gen eral knowledge. Four cafes of mercurial poisoning— three of them with suicidal intent- are reported In Tuesday’s press dis patches. In Baltimore, Md., Earl Wol- verton, the 2-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wolverton, got two tab lets of bichloride of mercury from the mantel In his home late Monday even ing and, taking them to the front steps, ate part of the poison. Doc tors say the child will be in real dan ger for ten days. At Thomasville, Ga., after taking three tablets of bichloride of mercury of 71-2 grains each, Mrs. George King Is still alive, though growing weaker. The poison was taken Sun day, with suicidal Intent. Physicians do not think Mrs. King has any chance for recovery. After swallowing two bichloride of mercury tablets in an effort to com mit suicide late Monday night, Ruby White, of Savannah, was hurried to a hospital before the deadly poison could get It in its work. She Is ex pected to recover. In San Francisco, Mrs. Agnes Spalding, prominent in San Francisco society, swallowed 20 mercury tablets when she learned tha* her former husband, Dr. Otis B. Spalding, from whom she was divorced, was about to wed again. She was reported to be dying to-day. Vienna Professor So Impressed That He Is Sending His Son Here to Study, Special Cable to The Atlanta Georgian. VIENNA, June 3.—Carl VonNoor- den, an eminent professor of the medical faculty of Vienna University, who has lectured several times in America, is paying the United States the compliment of sending his son to Johns Hopkins University, at Bal timore. Prof. VonNoorden says: “I have repeatedly, during the last ten years, availed myself of the wel come opportunity afforded me of vis iting the United States, and in the course of these trips I have devoted myself to the study of the medical situation in America. ‘I am bound to say that during my last year’s lecture trip I noticed a truly remarkable, nay, enormous, progress in some branches of medical science and practice, as compared with 1907, the year of my preceding visit. “While in 1907 the faculties and hospitals were lacking essential re quisites in the men and institutions, the progress made in the few years since that time must be accounted marvelous. In some branches Amer ica has even attained the top o2 the ladder and is fully equal to Germany, which, in some respects, it has even outdistanced. I refer in this regard to experimental medicine and ques tions of nutrition, diabetes, kidney troubles, etc. "Most remarkable in this respect Is the work in New York, Boston, New Haven, Baltimore and Philadelphia; and the post-graduate work of young doctors in these cities is worthy of the highest praise and recognition. It finds a -counterpart only in Germany, where, by the way, post-graduate practice is compulsory. “Personally, I am bound to pay my respects to this state of affairs by sending my son to Baltimore, where he will be an assistant to Prof. Bar ker at Johns Hopkins University, and I hope that my example will be fol lowed by others to their advantage.” J. P. Stevens Shows Where Chat tanooga and Other Towns Are More Progressive. J. P. Stevens, who was president of the association that gave the first ex hibition of Atlanta-made products at the State Fair in 1902, was one of the party from the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce that visited Chattanooga to study the permanent exhibit of the Manufacturers' Association there. He came away impressed with the benefit the institution has conferred upon Chattanooga. He hae, at the request of the Chamber of Commerce, written the following statement in regard to the exhibit: ^ “As a member of the Chamber of Commerce committee to inspect the permanent exhibition in Chattanooga, 1 desire to express the hope that there will be put into effect at once a move ment to carry out upon a larger scale the installation of a permanent exhi bition of articles manufactured in At lanta. '^Chattanooga’s success in this di rection should serve as an inspira tion to us. I was amazed at the va riety and merit of the products shown there. In no other way could Chat tanooga have so effectively placed be fore the world her claims and her ac complishments as a manufacturing Renter. "This is an age of competition be tween cities as well as individuals. Und Atlanta can not afford to be left behind in this contest. The wonder ful growth of California cities is an object lesson to the world in the march of municipal progress, and in each of the principal ones we find permanent exhibitions. “The census reports show that 30 years ago Los Angeles and Atlanta had about the same population; to day Los Angeles’ population Is more than twice that of Atlanta, and no one who sees her great permanent ex hibition can doubt for a moment what a. potent factor it has been in ac complishing this result. “Atlanta should display her re sources; her own citizens would be astonished if the manufacturers would all come forward and show what they are doing. “Let us get together and give an exhibition that will put into concrete form a true interpretation of the ‘At lanta spirit.’ ” Rebels Lack ‘Nerve’ For Aerial Attack DOUGLAS, ARZ„ June 3.—The plan of the Sonora rebels to drop bombs from an aeroplane upon the Mexican Federals intrenched in and around Guayamas has been abandoned. It was found that the aeroplane, Which is an antiquated machine, has not enough plane surface to rise be yond the danger zone of 3,500 feet In addition, no Mexican has been round with sufficient courage to as cend in the aircraft. Boy, 14, Begins Life Term for Slaying GENEVA, ILL., June 3.—Henry Koppage, aged 14, today left for Joliet, Ill., to begin serving a life sentence for the murder of Mrs. Maud Sleep and her two children, aged 2 and 6. The lad appeared unconcerned when sentenced. Charles D. Barker, Journalist, Is Dead Charles D. Barker, one of Atlanta’s oldest newspaper men, died at 8:45 o’clock Tuesday morning at his home, 112 Oglethorpe Avenue. Mr. Barker was injured in a street car accident on November 23 and had been in ill health since. In an ef fort to regain his health he spent several months in Florida, but had been rapidly sinking since his re turn home two months ago. Mr. Barker for twenty-six years was editor of The Southern Star, a weekly paper published in Atlanta. He is survived by a wife and two sons, William Leonard and Charles D. Barker, Jr., of Atlanta. Funeral services will be held at 4 o’clock Wednesday afternoon from the Barclay & Brandon Chapel. Inter ment will be at Oakland. Sam Saloshin, formerly of Atlanta, died at Denver, Colo., Sunday morn ing. The body will arrive here Wednesday afternoon. The funeral will be from Greenberg & Bond’s Chapel at 4 o’clock Thursday after noon. Mr. Saloshin was twenty- three years old. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Saloshin, of 198 C'afiitol Avenue. Interment v/ill be at Oakland. Mrs. Nancy Adeline Hendrix, sixty- five years old, of 190 West Four teenth Street, died at a private sanitarium Tuesday morning. She is survived by a son, Jeff Hendrix, and a daughter Mrs. Frances Franklin. Funeral arrangements will be announced later. G. G. Hall, fifty-four years old, died at 7 o’clock Tuesday morning at the residence In Oak Grove Park. He was a member of the Car Repairers’ Union and is survived by a wife and four children. Funeral ar rangements will be announced later. Labor Unrest Adds To Strife in Mexico Special Cable to The Atlanta Georgian. MEXICO CITY, June 3.—Labor conditions are becoming serious in Mexico and are adding menacing complications to the revolutionary situation throughout the republic. Many Americans are leaving be cause of business and industrial stag nation. Several cotton goods facto ries in this State closed down unex pectedly to-day, throwing 1,500 per sons out of work. POET RILEY’S FRIEND DIES. ANDERSON. IND., June 3.—Theo dore (Dory) Biddle, 62, former pub lisher of The Anderson Bulletin, died to-day. Biddle was an intimate friend of James Whitcomb Riley.
