Picking of Ducks
Reduces Egg Product
Excitement and 8traln Upon System
in Producing New Feathers
Too Great.
\V r e are so often asked the questions
as to picking Runner ducks, feeding,
etc., that we wish to express our
views upon the subject for the bene
fit of our readers In general.
The picking of a large, heavily
feathered duck like the Pekin or
Aylesbury, is a matter of some profit,
we presume, for they are not of an
excitable or nervous temperament
like the Runner.
We believe that the Runner should
not be picked at all. There is no
question but what the excitement of
picking, together with the strain upon
the system in producing a new coat
of feathers, would greatly reduce :he
egg product for a considerate pe
riod And you know It would take
but a few eggs to amount to more
than the amount or feathers secured
from the duck at a nicking, so we
say, Don’t.
The feed for laying ducks should be
of a good mash, composed as follows:
Equal parts of com meal, wheal bran
and middlings, 'to which add about
one-fourth part of good, freshly made
beef scraps At times when other
green stuff is scarce, about an equal
part of alfalfa or clover meal should
be added. This mash should be made
up soft—in fact, if it ia almost slop
py, all the better. This should be
fed every morning and about three
nights out of the week, the rest of
the time feed cracked com, wheat,
rye, kaffir corn—in fact, any of the
good, wholesome grains—for the de
sired changes they make.
Give Ginger.
Where a flock Is being pushed for
eggs alone and not to be used as
breeders, a little ginger may be given
advantageously twice a week, at the
rate of a teaspoonful to a flock of
20 to 25.
This is mentioned for the benefit of
those who are keeping a lot of Run
ners for market eggs, expecting to
market the ducks also later on.
Young ducks should be started
much as chickens are by feeding smail
mixed chicken feed dry and then a
feed of dry bread soaked in milk or
cracker crumbs moistened with milk.
Rolled oat* makes a good addition to
the rations, just fed dry. As the
ducklings grow older they can grad
ually be switched to the food used for
the grown ducks, bearing in mind at
all times that they need a good lot of
green stuff in some shape and a lot of
grit. It Is a good plan to mix the
grit right In with their mash, in the
shape of sand for the light little ones
and coarser grit as they get older.
For the first two w T eeks they must be
supplied with a water fountain of
some kind, so arranged that they can
rot get themselves wet. Young and
growing ducks should have all the
food they will clean up at a time and
never allowed to go to bed hungry, it
you want good and rapid growth.
Questions and Answers.
Judge Marshall: I w’ould like to
know the trouble with some of our
chickens.
They appear well and hearty, but
stagger and fall over, and will some-
tirv.x. a | lve f or months and eat hearty
all the time. If we scare one of them
suddenly as they start to run off
they will fall and roll over. We have
a fine flock of Rhode Island Reds and
have lost six or seven in this way.
They don’t seem to lose much in
weight until they get to falling about
and until they can’t well eat. The
comb and gills stay red and Indicate
good health.
The first sign is they will reel or
stagger if frightened and gradually
grow worse until they just fall over
and reel every time they get up. Two
or three were this way for five or six
months and seemed hungry all the
time. Let me know the trouble and
the remedy. P. M.
Town vllie, S. C.
Answer: It looks to us a good deal
like general debility or tuberculosis.
We can not tell which, just from the
description you have given. Then
that other everlasting enemy to the
chicken raiser, the mite. The tuber
cular condition is being found in a
good many cases during the past
twenty years, and seems to be o-n the
increase, for that reason if you have
an idea that that is the trouble you
better kill and burn right away and
get them out of the company of other
good fowls. The general debility
phase is a result of carelessness and
in-breeding. I say both, because it is
usually the result of both. Poultry
raisers who have not made a study
of the best phases and methods com
monly breed from anything that looks
like the variety they are raising, often
letting color run away with every
thing else, breeding to specimens that
are too small or not developed in
breast and body as they should be, or
have had some very debilitating dis
ease like roup or canker, and then
getting apparently over it, but are
very much weakened from its ill ef
fects. This course of breeding through
carelessness * or lack of knowledge of
the matter will, in the course of a few
years, produce a strain of fowls that
ar<‘ utterly lacking in stamina or vi
tality and there will be some of the
flock that will go just as you have
described—tumbling over from sheer
weakness.
Such weaklings are Just fit sub
jects for the tubercular germs to
thrive and develop in, so that it is a
combination of ailments. However,
you had best look well to the mite
problem, the least yet often
the most disastrous in its re
sults. If your chickens have them get
after them and do not let up until you
have really conquered the situation.
