Judge F. J Marshall—l began
raiding chickens this year fur Hie
first time. I am having some trouble
with them and write to beg some of
I >mur valuable advice. There are
] thn-c things which I want to know
; especially. First, most of my grown.
*-hick* ns have what the rook calls
pip; they make h queer, sharp noise
when they ent and have a thorny
gr-ovth on their tongues, otherwise,
♦hey seem perfectly well. Second, J
have lost three hens and 1 am about
to lose a fourth, and all are affected
uilk-. though all at different times -
weeks apart, in fart. They droop, will
| not eat, combs are grayish white, and
I they have a kind of yellow dysentery.
| Third, my last trouble Is really th*
i greatest. I have lost about half of
my little chicken* with sore eyes. In
tlie morning I have to wash their
■yes open with borax and water. It
is not sorehead, only the very' young
I•hb k are affected. The ones that
| live to be two weeks old g»*t over it.
I Neither Is it the dew, as some of
’them have It before I let them out
lat all. They also have bowel trouble,
| when they first hatch they are al)
right If you can help me out 1 shall
he deeply grateful. Your paper has
I been of inestimable value to both
myself and my husband and we hope
never to be without it. Pleaae also
tell me If I may feed raw chopped

ly chopped com to th*' old ones and
eggbread to the young ones.

is declared to be the disease which
<an only be taken into the system
through the mouth, it become* the
duty of the ow ner to use the greatest
vigilance to dean the drinking ve«-

and hum or bury deep any afflicted
fowl* when noticed first, as it is not
a good policy to try to treat the af
fected fowl* with this disease for the
benefit of the well ones. The disease
is usually Imported by bringing an
infected fowl into one's yards. It is
a disease which runs its course very
rapidly, usually in two to three days,
and sometimes in 36 hours. Cholera
is a disease which is not very com
mon, however. In your case 1 am
quite sure the trouble is not cholera.
Raise Chicken Feed Yourself.
Our farmer friends, by all moani,
Mhould raise their own chicken feed,
if they do not raise nil the feed used
for the other stock. There is noth
ing better or more wholesome for
growing chicks than nice fresh home
grown grain wheat for the little
ones a* goon as they are large enough
to eat i». in t.i< i, if it :s crackid
it is all right for the newly hatche 1
ones. For that matter, mix wheat
and oats and have thorn cracked; it
makes a fine first feed. They can eat
it all •x- opt some hulls, which the
old chick* ris w ill soon clean up.
It takes but little time and trouble
to plant wane of the corners and out
of-the way »j»*»ts In wheat, oats and
katfir corn. You will scarcely mist
oe time, and vet you will raise feed
enough to keep large numbers of hena '
and valuable broods of youngsters for :
broilers, with the pullets for next
years’ layers. Many of our farmers
do not feed their chicks as heavily as
they should simply because they are
paying for all this feed at the country
store and it Is rather expensive. This i
should not be allowed to occur an
other season. Change your program.
