Solicitor General Ross and Law
yer Harris Clash Over Trial
of Vice Cases.
MACON, July 12 Attorney Jesse |
’ Harris brought about a sudden |
i adjournment of the special c riminal .
| session of the Bibb Superior Court j
yesterday afternoon by railing So- t
licitor John P. Ross a liar and strik- j
ing him in the fare in the court- ,
room. Harris was fined ss<» for con j
tempt <»f court and also «'ensured by ;
i Judge Mathews for his conduct.
Harris represented fifteen women j
of the restricted district who are
charged with operating disorderly
houses. In moving for a continuance
of these cases, ho declared Chat So
licitor Ross would not call the cases
represented by any other lawyers, but
1 was seeking solely to prosecute those
represented by him (Harris).
"That’s a falsehood, your honor,”
interposed the Solicitor.
“You’re a liar," shouted Attorney
Harris, striking the Solicitor in the
face.
Deputies seized both men imme-
i diately.
“He’s a dirty little scoundrel; let
, me hit him once," shouted Solicitor
j Rohs, but was restrained.
j Judge Mathews held that the jury
j was prejudiced in the matter of try
! ing any of the defendants repreaent
j ed by Harris, and as Solicitor Ross
■ refused to call any other cases,
! though stating that he was prepared
for trial In all of them, the court
, was adjourned for the term and all
j parties discharged. The Solicitor
stated that Harris represented all of
the prominent defendants, and that
i he did not propose to try the lesser
; and weaker defendants first. "There
are ’stars’ of varying magnitude* in
Tybee (the vice district) us well as
I in glory," he said.

3 Mating for Breeding
- Purposes; Also Why
Hens Go Blind
r Questions Answered That Might Be
Ones You Are Anxious to
d Have Explained.
A
By JUDGE F. J. MARSHALL.
Judge F. J. Marshall: I will ap
preciate some good advice. Last Feb-
* ruary I got five thoroughbred S. C.
Whit- Leghorns. From these I have
raised 110 chickens, in addition to
■9 having used some eggs for the table.
What arrangement should I make
ir in the autumn for cocks? Must I
dispose of ail that I raise and pro-
9 cure fresh male birds, and how many
- shall I kep for, say 60 hens? My
Leghorn dock has free range on Ber-
6 muda and Johnson grass, and will
d have cowpeas and winter oats. What
7 feeding will they need during the fall
p and winter? When may I expect my
. pullets to lay that were hatched dur
-7 Ing April and May? I plan in the
7 autumn to fence in a half-acre of
winter oats, to divide it In half, and to
g keep in these two divisions, altemat
d Ingly, some large fowls from which
~ to raise early broilers. What Is the
very best breed for this purpose?
8 I do not need a general utility fowl,
as my Leghorns will provide me with
- eggs. I Simply want a breed that are
,j early layers and rapid growers. How
r many birds can I keep to advantage
n on my half-acre? I have recently
< hatched sixteen thoroughbred ducks,
they are Pekin ducks, from which
; I wish to raise. Is it better to give
them range or keep them in an en
closure? What proportion of drakes
• are needed, and must I procure others
than those which I have hatched.
Gunnison, Miss. MRS. M. M. S.
, Reply: I should advise keeping the

I 60 hens and pullets you are going to
have on your free range. One male
to every fifteen females is sufficient

I Where stock is yarded, there should
be one male to every ten females.
Your Leghorn pullets hatched in April
and May should commence laying in 1
September and October, perhaps some 1
of them a little sooner than that ,

disease to bother them during their ■

Judge Marshall: Will you kindly
give me an idea as to what causes
some of my hens to go blind? Thev
seem to first swell up some and run
at the corner and then, the first thing
I know-, they have gone blind—the '
ball being ail gone. If you can tell

Reply: Your hens have the roup 1
or have had it, and the disappearing
of the eye is the result of it. You
see roup is but a severe, malignant 1 i
type of cold, which attacks fowls
roosting 1n damp quarters, or where
there is a direct draught through the
house upon them. When one gets J
it in this severe type it is transmit
ted from one to the other through
the drinking water and the feed
trough. The cold stops the air pas
sages from the nostrils to the throat.
ch forces the inflammation out
through the eye duct, causing it to
inflame It usually affects but one
side at a time and then the breath

fowl will be noticed gasping for
breath, with the mouth open. When

cured by Injecting kerosene into the
nostril and a little down the throat
