POULTRY, PET AND LIVE STOCK
Profit From Poultry
Depends Upon Care
Exercise, Feed, Housing, all Vital
in Chicken
Raising.
Fowls can not care for themselves
and produce a profit. The smallest of
the Individual unit In poultry is what
causes people to look upon the business
as rather small. However small the
individuals may seem in comparison
with other live stock they should re
ceive careful attention to Insure suc
cess.
The poultry keeper, whether making
It a side line to his business or a spe
cialty, should have a definite end in
view. The purpose should be clearly
denned and kept constantly in mind.
It is necesasry to have orderly plans
mapped out in order that the work shall
go on regularly.
No kind of business seems to respond
more promptly to careful methodical
work than the chicken business. Con
ditions differ on farms and poultry
plants, and for that reason each one
must in a measure map out his own
line of work, but whatever it is it should
be done in a systematic manner by the
proper person at the proper time.
It is u fortunate condition that per
mits of caring for the poultry by the
interested members of the poultryman s
family. Fowls are creatures of habit
and dependent upon their keeper. This
is especially true in their feeding.
Rich Food Needed.
A 4%-pound Leghqrn hen laying 175
eggs per year yields fully five times
her weight, and that too, in a concen
trated form. Perhaps a good deal of
the time she is laying an egg daily.
To accomplish this feat the hen must
not only have rich food in abundance,
but should receive It at regular inter
vals.
To accomplish regularity In the care
of fowls it must be understood whose
duty it is to attend to each line of
wgrk. there he no misunderstand
ing and consequent neglect by one per
son thinking that some one else has
done the work. Everything should go on
like a clock. Learn to save Tabor and
prevent waste in all parts of the busi
ness.
Shelter is all important, both to pro
tect your fowls from the cold and rain
You should aim to maintain comfort
in your flock at all seasons. Keep wa
ter vessels above the dirt and litter of
the floor Have them of such rjaterial
th'^t they may be cleaned easily. There
should be no bad smell about a poultry
house. Keepers of small flocks of poul
try often become careless and negligent
about cleaning their houses and the
result is often failure and disgust with
llo one to blame but themselves.
For (hose who do not care to go to
the trouble to clean out their poultry
houses even' morning a good plan Is
to sprinkle over the dropping some dry
road dust or sawdust, and clean but
once a weak. Of course provision must
he made for your dust during the sum
mer months. It is the part of good
management to have a dry shed for
storing the poultry manure to be used
as a fertilizer.
A thorough whitewashing inside and
out should.be given nt least twice dur
ing the summer months.
Exercise Is Important.
The amount of exercise depends large
ly upon the breed and the condition of
chickens. Overfat fowls should be com
pelled to work for what they g(H until
they are reduced to a reasonable con
dition, while thin fowls should not be
compelled to scratch for their feerv
Fowls *that seem inactive and sluggish
should have plenty of green stuff and
scratch for thein food.
Free range always provides plenty of
exercise. In close confinement it is dif
ferent. however, and some ingenuity
must be exercised to Incruce yoiLr fowls
to take exercise enough to make their
blood circulate and produce good health
either by scratching for their grain or
jumping to secure cabbage hung by a
string too high for them to stand and
reach it
The more exercise that Is provided
the less likely the fowls are to acquirt
bad habits, such as egg eating, feather
pulling, etc. It is always easier to pre
vent disease than it is to cure it; hence
it is advisable to quarantine all pur
chased fowls for at least ten days until
all possibility of Infection Is passed.
