LONGEST TUNNEL
■p I HE longest tunnel in the world is the Simplon,
which is twelve and one-half miles long. It took
'Vj. over eight years to complete, at a cost of nearly
$20,000,000. The tunnel gives France and Switzer
land direct communication with Milan.
Many people are s till under the impression that
the St. Gothard tunnel is the longest, but. as a mat-
■ ter of fact, the Simplon tunnel is one-fourth more in
length than the St. Gothard. and nearly twice the
length of the Mont Cenis.
