Highest Active Volcano The loftiest active volcano in the world is Popocatapetl, situated forty miles southeast of the City of Mexico. It rises in the form of a cone to a height of 17,520 feet above sea level and its crater has a diameter of about 2,700 feet and a circumference of three miles. About the period of the Spanish conquest it was very active, but to-day it emits nothing but fumes. From time to time the volcano is exploited by mining engineers, the system being rather unique. Indians are em ployed, who ascend the mountain daily, fill sacks with sul phur in the crater and then slide down the precipitous snow side of the volcano on these improvised gas bags.
